Call of Duty Modern Warfare – Here’s a look at all the new weapons, maps and Gunsmith mode from the big reveal event

Modern Warfare (7)

Love it or hate it, but if Activision can sell an entire Titanic’s worth of Call of Duty every single year then they must be doing something right. While the campaign mode of this year’s Modern Warfare wants to shine a serious light on war, it may be at odds with the multiplayer component of the package which is looking to emphasise a number of new factors within its DNA.

More customisation, bigger maps and an America’s worth of guns will be on offer, so here’s a closer look at Modern Warfare will be offering players when it arrives later in the year. Pew pew.

Gunsmith

Modern Warfare (10)

Adapt, survive and overcome. That’s the idea behind Modern Warfare’s new Gunsmith system, that focuses on giving players more options than ever for choosing the right loadout for their own style of run ‘n gun action. Infinity Ward says that each gun will have around 60 attachments to choose from, with each modification naturally having an effect on how far, fast and hard you can fire a full metal jacket from each barrel.

More importantly though, each attachment will have its own series of pros and cons that alter how any given gun performs. While some attachments may buff anything from walking speed to recoil, they may also impact on your accuracy and idle sway control. The plan here is for each attachment to feed players the info that keeps them updated of the risks and rewards with each modification attached to a weapon, so that they can create a more precise level of quid pro quo in their loadouts.

It’s up to you to decide what you want to sacrifice and focus on, as you rely on your strengths to make up for your weaknesses.

Beta dates

Modern Warfare (8)

Not long to go to get in on some beta action! Sony players will get the lion’s share of these events thanks to an exclusivity deal, with players who have their pre-orders in getting earlier access ahead of the wider open beta. The dates, they are below chums:

PlayStation 4

  • Early Access – September 12 -13
  • Open Beta – September 14 – 16

Xbox One and PC

  • Early Access – September 19 – 20
  • Open Beta – September 21 – 23

“Our studio goal for Modern Warfare was to create a completely new experience, and the most varied, customizable and realistic-feeling Call of Duty multiplayer,” Infinity Ward multiplayer gameplay director Geoff Smith said to GamesRadar.

Our design goal is for gamers to have fun by playing again and again with their friends, where the action will feel fresh, but also familiar for all players every time they jump in.

20 v 20

Modern Warfare (4)

While Gunfight may be Modern Warfare distilled to a smaller and purer multiplayer mode, other more traditional modes will be on offer as well. One of those modes is a game featuring twenty players taking on twenty other players across a wide map in the Domination gameplay mode. The goal is simple: Control certain points on the map, grab a loadout which can work at any range and go to war. It looks like a mad rush with multiple fronts to attack, meaning that players will need to really know the map, their team and weapons inside and out if they want to win.

    Ah, “Gunsmith” mode.

Yet another thing that CoD copied (Copy on Demand) from another game.

CoD can go suck eggs, real gamers should not support this

All of the best weapons! I’m all for the plethora of attachments. Being able to mechanically alter/customize guns is one thing that really kept me hooked on BF4.

This might be the first COD I buy in close to 10 years. Activision is making all the right mating calls. I hope EA takes note, get their dirty noses out of the surprise mechanics and make a decent new Battlefield.
