Look at any big game today, and you’ll notice that it has something attached to it like a conjoined foetus twin: DLC. Sometimes, that extra bit of DNA can be cut off, stuck in a jar and marvelled at. Other times, it’s better to forget about it and keep it as a dirty family secret. Pokémon however, doesn’t have to worry about any scarring on the side of that popular franchise.
Right from the start of the franchise, the crew behind Pokémon games have always been opposed to adding DLC to their core titles. “When it comes to business, the one thing I’ve always said ‘no!’ to is ‘the act of buying Pokémon with money,’” art director Ken Sugimori said in an interview that was translated by Siliconera.
That is something that has been said since the days [creator Satoshi] Tajiri was completely involved in everything.
The reason being, is because it’s one of things that could ‘ruin the worldview’ of Pokémon. I believe the reason we don’t simply commercialize [Pokémon], is that it’s a way of protecting the brand, and for this purpose, we have the specialty company called The Pokémon Company.
Therefore, suppose we sell a Pokémon for 100 yen, then we must prepare something that is worthy of that 100 yen, along with a reasonable consent for doing so.
And right now, Pokémon X and Y doesn’t even need to take the DLC route. It’s sold phenomenally well so far, and you can bet your Absol that the Pokémon Company has more games on the way that are going to take advantage of the latest generation of critters.
Clearly, someone knows what they’re doing.

Now that some of the DLC’s go on special on Steam I’m thinking, yes, I can spend that much for that amount of extra content. And then we’re talking about a dollar or two. But 100 Randelas for some extra weapons or what-have-you seems a bit ridiculous. Like getting a sword on WH Space Marine is R30! That’s a bit crazy.
