Dragon Ball is headed for the PlayStation 4

Get ready…to play all your favourite Dragon Ball Z battles again.Again.Again.Again.Again. But this time, with visuals that will go…even further…BEYOND!

With all the subtlety of launching a gigantic ball of weaponised energy at the planet and calling it the Big Bang Attack, Bandai Namco has revealed that a new Dragon Ball Z game is on the way for the PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Here’s the scanned image from the upcoming July issue of Shueisha’s V Jump magazine, if you happen to be able to read Japanese, which shows off the very first Dragon Ball game for new-gen consoles:

DBZ

While this version will no doubt recycle the same storylines the same way that Cape Town recycles their refuse and reasons why die Kaap is better than Jozi, there will be a new city featured that has some role to play in the game. Maybe. Probably. I don’t read Japanese dammit.

While I’m keen for a new Dragon Ball Z game with spruced-up visuals, I’m just hoping that this year Bandai Namco decides to kill the currently convoluted control scheme the same way that the manga regularly kills off Krillin.

A layout and input scheme that utilised what Dragonball Z Budokai implemented ten years ago for example, combined with the outstanding visuals? That’d take the game away from HFIL (Home For Infinite Losers and not Hell you damn censors) and into heaven.

Fat chance that that will ever happen, but let a fan have hope dammit. Or a dragon that would grant my wishes.

Krillin probably feels like he’s in limbo, dying in the TV series wasn’t enough now he has to relive it in every video game.

Maybe a new storyline? One can hope. Though I doubt the win will be anything but lots of shouting, transforming to SS level whatever and finishing it with a Kamehameha or Spirit Bomb

probably something similar Ultimate Tenkaichi, where you made your own Saiyan and played through the story line with your custom Z fighter.
        same story, different character.
I just hope its more Budokai and less ultimate tenkaichi/battle of z

How many DB games and spinoffs have there been? I have never played one…for a change I don’t even own one!

Are they glorified beat em ups? RPG-lite?

Way, way too many. You’ve got the Budokai games from the PS2 era, which peaked at number 3 and was recently re-released in HD on PS3 and Xbox 360.

You’ve got some great GBA games such as The Legacy of Goku 1 and 2 which are RPGs similar to the legend of Zelda and a great handheld brawler such as DBZ: Supersonic Warriors.

Fast forward to the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, and the current crop of DBZ games have been great lookers, but plagued with boring ideas, combat and control schemes which are ridciulously complex.

I want them to take a couple years and make one that raises the bar. Ultimate Tenkaichi was headed in the right direction, but the fights were a little too cinematic. The create a character feature was so cool!
