Gears 2: More Emotionally Affecting than Bioshock

37 second read

Gears 2 is bigger better and more bad ass

So Gears of War 2 is not suffering from a lack of hype.. First we hear how fantastic the multi-player is going to be. Then how great the graphics are, then how great the co-op will be, then how great the single player will be.

Now we are being told that the story is going to be more emotionally charged than Bioshock…

I really hope it pulls it off as Gears 1 is easily one of the best games of this generation and if they get it right then Gears 2 may even knock GTA4 and MGS4 off the game of the year podium.

As much as I want to believe that, I just can’t. The characters and story in Bioshock were excellent. How emotionally involved can you get with a bunch of testosterone filled, wise cracking, macho soldiers?

There’s something about Dom and his relationship with his wife…

Anyway, i’ve purposely avoided clicking the play button on the Gears vids so far and I’ll probably stop reading any article about Gears. This game is going to overhype itself to a disappointment for me.

    Maybe some emotional brokeback moments…

This is like say Die Hard 5.0 is going to be a tear jerker. Silly to even think it will. I loved Bioshock for its ‘immersiveness’, they mastered intensity across the spectrum but at the same token I love Gears for it’s action shoot ’em up “It’s the Cole train muthafuckerness’. It’ll be spoilt if they go all brokeback with the storyline.

I’ll believe that Gears 2 even ‘has’ a story when I see it (come now, let’s be honest, Gears 1 barely had a narrative). However, I must admit, given that they made that Mad World trailer as emotionally charged as it was, who’s to say they can’t do it for the whole game? I expected that much emotion in Gears 1, but “eat shit and die” didn’t quite suffice.

So it could be emotionally charged. More so than Bioshock? I have a VERY hard time believing that.

Just let me blow shit up. “Anger” is an emotion too

Lol, I go with Anger 😉

On the other hand, maybe I’m just special, but I thought the story set up in Gears was pretty good, a lot Like Matrix 1. They allude to a lot of things that they can build on, tiny things here and there, without it getting in the way of the gameplay. Things like, Maria, things like the relationship between Fenix, the General/colonel dude and Fenix’s father, and the comments about the emulsion economy, and why the war started in the first place.

For me, if they can to to the Gears story what Matrix:Reloaded did for the Matrix story, I can’t wait.

I agree with you that there definitely is good potential there. Although I hated the other 2 Matrix movies (just like the new Star Wars ones) 😉
