Theme hospital

I doubt EA is anyone’s favourite company – the stink of those poo awards still lingers. However, even if you don’t like their business practices – and they have become much better –  they have made some excellent games. They’re giving away yet another one for free, and this time it’s an oldie but a goodie.

Thanks to its on the house program, you can grab this 1997 classic for the low, low price of free. Not that the game was that expensive on Origin normally, but free games are always appreciated. Never played Theme Hospital? Well, here’s the description:

The world of Theme Hospital is home to dozens of goofy, fictional diseases. Some humans are afflicted with Bloaty Head, causing their noggins to triple in size; others suffer from King Complex, a psychological disorder that infects its victims with the irresistible desire to impersonate Elvis Presley. All of these sick people need help – that’s where you come in.
Theme Hospital tasks you with designing, maintaining, and managing a hi-tech hospital as you service hundreds of ailing patients in an attempt to turn cures into cash. You’ll need to be quick on your feet in order to keep your staff happy and patients healthy. Fail, and your business will collapse. It’s time to find out if you’ve got what it takes to balance the books and the bedpans.

Yes, it’s basically a hospital management sim with a bizarre mix of ailments. It’s silly and strategic and made the end of the 90s a whole lot more fun. Plus, it’s a free game and will work on new systems.

Okay, so it’s not as high profile a game as other free games that EA has given away, but it’s still a rather fun title. Plus, exploding heads!

Just reiterating the fact that Sony was so “awesome” to pass on it as it offer no “value” to their ponies (yeah, R600 for UFC, BF4, Plants vs Zombies, Fifa 14, Madden 25, Need for Speed Rivals, Peggle 2 & counting is a complete rip off). ROFL, not to mention early access and discounts to new games! ????

You’re right. But for $5 a month it has no value for me. I’m getting the slim line XBOX One. I’m patient I can wait. Then I can finally play all the Halo but for $5 they better pony up more than seven games. Yearly sports titles,NFS and BF does not interest me in the least. I think I’d be more interested in a Ubi vault. They have a more diverse line up off games.

I can only imagine the hospital questionnaire you would have to fill out –
In the event the patient is black, please answer the following questions by marking it with an x:
      1) Are you allergic to teargas? [ ]yes [ ]no
      2) Have you ever used the word “Amandla”? [ ]yes [ ]no
      3) Are you willing to be horribly disfigured by a surgical procedure? [x]yes
      4) Do you have next of kin who could testify? [ ]yes [ ]no
(in the eventuality of question 4 being answered yes, please give their physical locations)
      etc.

I used to play those too. I came from the 386 and 486 machine days with games like Astro Fire, Goblins, Sopwith, Raptor, etc. (and obviously the famicon consoles too)

They were fun games and started me off in gaming but the 4 most defining games for me that really really set me:

Descent, Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, CounterStrike.

          • ToshZA

            January 21, 2015 at 08:51

Omg I remember Descent, holy crap spent so much damn time in those games. Those controls were so bloody annoying, geez.

Honestly though, I’d say Gene wars got me into RTS games, and Sim City/Sim Farm into management sims. Then I’d say doom 2 or Rise of the Triad hooked me on FPS games.

Eish, I don’t miss not having a hard drive XD Fuck we’re old XD

Back then games were so hard that you sucked until you finished the game at least twice. So considering I didn’t have the inclination to finish it, yes, I still sucked at it.

I remember having to use the fax machine in Theme hospital to put in cheat codes for those times you really were strapped for cash, and the PA system then saying loudly… “Hospital Administrator is cheating…”
