Kratos amazing technicolour dream-blades, now on Broadway

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Kratos has always been a one man army wrapped in chains and fashionable armour, but he’s never been much of a team player. That’s all set to change soon when God of War: Ascension releases, as the prequel will include several multiplayer modes, which Sony claims will give competitive gaming a “fresh twist”.

Whether that’s from a blade or a concept, no one knows yet.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Game Director Todd Papy spoke about how the new multiplayer modes combined “the brutal gameplay and large-scale battles that God of War is known for to create a competitive experience like never before”, and included customisation options for warriors and their kits.

Papy also said that Ascension would feature a single-player campaign that’s “”just a little bit shorter” than in previous God of War games.”

We’ve mapped out everything and given time estimates. It’ll be pretty damn close.

Papy also explained how the combat had been reworked, and how mini-games would be “promptless”, and would also include “fluid, life-like characters, dynamic lighting effects, and world-changing scenarios”.

Sounds like the usual marketing fluff so far, but what about the actual single-player then, will it be a quick tie-in, for a presumed focus on the new multiplayer? Not so, says lead combat designer Jason McDonald;

We didn’t want to sacrifice single-player for multiplayer, neither did we want to tack [the latter] on,” he said. “We’re definitely going full force with both.

Ascension takes place in the younger days of everybodys favourite Greek with staggering anger management issues, as he seeks a way to break the blood oath that binds him to the war god Aries, as well as a way to exact even more revenge on the deity for his role in the murder of Kratos’ family.

Sounds interesting so far, and could be a neat twist on multiplayer then. And lookee here, new screenshots to whet your blood rage have also appeared!
