GTA IV has a mandatory PS3 install.. Optional on the 360

According to the rumours going around this console game install crap is showing no sign of going away. Even worse it seems to now be affecting the 360 versions of games as well.

If the rumours are to be believed then the PS3 version of GTA IV has a mandatory 5 minute install and the 360 version has an optional install.

My gut feel is that someone is making it up as the claimed reason for the PS3 installs is because of the slow read access of Blu-Ray drives and the bottleneck in the PS3’s lack of RAM.

Two things that don’t affect the 360.

Console installs are my pet hate and now with it becoming the norm I am becoming happier that the Arcade doesn’t have a HDD which forces the devs to make sure that an install isn’t mandatory on the 360.

What’s next? downloading new drivers for our GPU’s to run certain games….

Console installs are by far the worst thing to come out of this generation and it must be stopped….

Oh, the horror. All the PS3 owners will be too old to enjoy GTA IV by the time it has finished installing!

    Doos

    /no sarcasm

It will probably install a lot faster on the PS3 than an xbox, so lucky for xbox owners the install is optional

btw, I can say what I want, it is flamebait Friday 🙂

    lol.

I think the install thing is overblown. Having to manage space is a bit of a bummer, but with a mandatory HDD it was inevitable. If someone is too impatient to wait a few minutes, well, they need to get out more.

is it me, or aren’t the installs there to bring down the load times while playing? I mean, When i was playing Vice City on me ps2 (yes, a long time ago) I got those horrid loading screens when i move from the one island to the other, it annoyed the shyte out of me!
yes, as much as we might hate it, I think the way that these games are going, it seems to me that installs might just be the better of the two evils

oh and lazy, I seem to have been away the whole week, went to drakensberge for long walks and such 😀
SO i see the site has changed again, and well done mate, it looks good!

I’m with doobi (much like my youth when I always had a doobie) on the whole install thing. Given a choice I’d install all my games onto HDD and not have to listen to the optical drive all the time. But I am a longtime PC gamer so installs are nothing new to me

I too am not a fan of mandatory installs on consoles, but I have to say, the load times are dramatically reduced as a result

We asked for faster loads..and guess what..we got them. This is the only way to do it at the mo

Doh its Flamebait Friday – ignore previous rational post. I can’t believe PS3 owners will have a mandatory install for GTA IV the only mandatory install Xbox owners will have is the Exclusive DLC ! 🙂

lol. DLC is better than no DLC therefore the 360 version is superior.

On topic: Why the need for a 360 install if the reason for a PS3 install is slow BR reading?
I’m not too fussed though, the game will be good enough to warrant a 5 minute long wait while it installs.

Hmmm, shame. Let’s hope this isn’t like Devil May Cry 4, which took 20 minutes to install on the PS3 and still ended up loading just as long as the 360 version.

I love that developers will start to use the hard drive, but this might make them all very inefficient as well. Anyone else notice that the PC install for UT3 was larger than the entire game on the PS3 disc?
