Help with cancer awareness by playing games this weekend

Cancer has affected pretty much everyone I know in one form or another and the disease is terrifying simply because it doesn’t seem to care who it affects. Young and old, healthy people and people who smoke a pack a day seem to be equally at risk.

There are a few people in the gaming industry currently who are suffering with the horrifying effects of cancer and while the unfortunate truth is that there really is nothing that the large majority of us can do to help stop it.

However this weekend we can do a little bit to raise funds and awareness for Cancer by doing what we love best, playing games.

This weekend Next weekend Emperors Palace will play host to the 7th national Gaming For Cancer event hosted by Liberty LAN.

LibertyLan

Emperors Palace has given them a 800 seat location to host the LAN making it easily one of the biggest LAN’s in the country which is enough reason to rock up all on its own.

However to make the event even more interesting SteelSeries and ASUS have teamed up with them to run three different tournaments with prizes ranging from cold hard cash to headsets, mouse and towels.. yes towels.

The tournaments will cover DOTA 2, CS: GO and Call of Duty: Ghosts. The tournament will be run by the experienced team over at Do Gaming and will be headed by Robert Hart.

For full details check out the announcement on the DGL page and the original LibertyLan homepage.

But you are going to want to be quick as there are only 330 spaces left.

Emperors Palace? Is that in Namibia? Botswana? Or one of the equally foreign and distance places us denizens of the mountains care not for? 😛

      Near the JHB international airport.

Apartheid museum is / was there. Quite interesting for me, a bit of a history buff to see that.

Nah, I saw it many years ago (2005?) at Emperors Palace. It was in a temporary hall, put up on the wall and on temporary boards. That is why I said is / was there. Was not sure

      Hey,Emperor’s Palace it is.

I used to smoke, so I understand the need. But perhaps, during the weekend, as a gesture of good faith for “cause”, they should close it and instead put pamphlets and stuff there instead

          Awesome, so you quit too.

Man, not an easy thing to do. And to keep on the wagon? I find smoking is like a disease, I still, years later, get odd craving every now and again to smoke.

When I have a few drinks I use that twisp stuff to sort me out. I actually tried a normal cig in a pissed state a few weeks ago, was instantly sick 😉

Ah, drinking. I stopped drinking while I was quitting smoking. There was no way I could carry on and stop smoking.

Good on you for having plan (Twisp, whatever that is) for when you drink

Now, I drink very little, normally the good stuff, aged scotch, and then not very much at all.

I know this sounds insensitive, but a better shocker would be people on their deathbeds dying of cancer and emphysema. My father in law passed away that way.. horrible way to go, all skeletal and such

It seems to me cancer is indeed a disease on the the rise: we know of more and more people that have it / get it. Is the medical community getting better at diagnosing it, perhaps?

We know of so many people with Cancer and the treatments, the new ones, are so expensive, family homes are lost to pay for it. Check your medical aid, you will be shocked to see how little they actually pay for treatment. R300 000 when each treatment is R30 to R50k does not stretch far, Grandmother in law went through that.

My wife and I have both lost close family members to Cancer (me, several). My life insurance policy has an extra “Dread disease” cover, that should, for the most part, sort out the financial side if it hits either of us. Also, is it hereditary? Who knows. House Doctor days likely, but studies show different results.

I applaud efforts like this, I truly do. Well done them and to the people who go have fun in a good cause.

Good idea, good support for cancer and gamers showing that we’re not violent psychos as most see us as being.
