Here’s how to upgrade PS4 games to PS5

Sony might not have the fancy marketing of Microsoft’s well-branded Xbox Smart Delivery, but that doesn’t mean that certain games won’t be getting a free remaster if you’re planning to hop from PS4 on over to PS5. Certain third-party games will have free upgrades, but how will it work on PS5? Unlike the Xbox One to Xbox Series X ecosystem, a few extra steps are required to get your game running on Sony’s next-gen hardware, which it detailed in a new blog post.

If you’ve been hoarding a stack of game discs on PS4, then the regular PS5 console will be the only way to play them as the system needs to authenticate ownership of that game after it downloads the digital edition to your console. It sounds obvious, but if you have discs and a Digital Edition PS5, then you’re completely out of luck. If you have spent the last few years venturing into a digital marketplace, it’s much easier: Simply log in to your account on the PS5, and you’ll have access to all your purchases in your game hub with a handy dandy upgrade as well.

If said game isn’t listed for the free next-gen rejiggering, you’ll be getting the PS4 version instead. Simple! And now for the catch to all of this: While the PS5 is starting to build up a decent backwards compatible library, save games are another story entirely. “Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games,” Sony said.

Sony also says that ten games won’t be making the next-gen jump to PS5, so pour a forty out for these fellas who are being left behind. Here’s the list:

PS5-incompatible games

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma – Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

The only one I’m sad about is TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2, which is a genuinely superb bit of motorsport. So there you have it! If you have discs, buy a PS5 with a disc-drive. If you prefer digital, maybe save a few bucks and buy the slightly cheaper PS5. If you’re a fan of Afro Samurai 2, get bent last-gen grandpa.

  1. I like Sony’s approach to all of this, it’s very reminiscent of how they handled the PS4s reveal and launch.

Slowly trickle out the information, and with each reveal keep the excitement and anticipation high. Sure, you have the occasional voice screaming “I want it all now”, but real men know that merely indulging yourself and going for instant gratification is the path of a loser.

Microsoft’s slam-bang-thank-you-maam approach is so … dated. What’s there to be excited for after they basically threw their gruel onto the floor for the pigs to suck it up with their snouts. Now, the pigs are just sitting there, staring at a barren floor… devoid of any gruel. Whereas, in the Sony mansion, the guests are enjoying another course in a classy multi-course dinner event.

It really makes you wonder, Are they even trying at Microsoft? They haven’t even wowed us with the insides of their silly little black heater.

Not as sweet and can conveniently be easily changed to plaintans with a typo.

And unless you’re a hopeful presidential candidate who goes overboard on the tanning, no one should ever just go for a plaintan

:/ That was funnier in my head.

I think MS had more available stock and wanted to shatter pre-order sales records for their consoles perhaps? Differing approaches – we will see how it all plays out. Super Hype and pre-order vs trickling hype and no stock 🙂

Maybe, by the way, have they released those figures yet?

Sony went the other route and said, we only have x available, and now they’re sold out, and we screwed up allocation, but they’re sold out… sorry..

Sony and co are basically just hilarious trolls.

Don’t know the figures yet. I expect to see them closer to financial year end figures being released. And then I will promptly wait for the CH article as I’m not gonna see it otherwise. Or if Angry Joe or Layman report on it.

Angry Joe is still around? Hot damn… I kind of got tired of his angry persona, but the dude can’t be faulted for the production values on his videos. I might have to google his recent stuff. I’ve mostly been listening to and watching Yong Yea on Youtube. I like that he’s so chilled.

I never got into his stuff. I always liked the guys who are boring AF. Red Gaming Tech put me to sleep. Good grief.

He’s mellow, and ust what you need when you need something in your ear, while playing Warframe. Although, to be honest, I’ve mostly been listening to Last podcast on the Left.

I can’t get enough of all the dodgy stories about serial killers…. 😮

Jim Can’t Swim. He breaks down police interviews. He talks about techniques used by Detectives in order to break down killers into confessing. Brilliant stuff.

He includes footage of the interviews he is talking about.

Other Joe and Alex have a lot more screen time these days on the various videos. Branched out to not just game stuff. But yeah, he does get a bit tiresome some days. I only watch select videos on things that really interest me. Yong irritated me a bit when quite a few of his videos were just basically reading an article but not supplying the link in the description. I mean, I can read myself. Also, that was around ME Andromeda so got tired of him then. Or rather, not enthused enough to return.

Another thing, Everyone keeps asking if Sony has mesh shaders….They do. It’s just called geometry shaders. You see, in the land of 3d, One of the terms used to describe the topology or rather the way the actual lines and points or edges and vertexes are put together to is mesh. Another way to describe that is geometry. They are both different bits of lingo that mean the same thing. So whenever you hear some Xbox guy asking, where are the mesh shaders, just point and laugh.
