carmageddon

Back before the iconic and controversial Grand Theft Auto let you run around being an ignoble murderous reprobate, games mostly had you being the hero; a faultless protagonist whose job it was to bring morally bankrupt scum to task. Well, except for the bloody and brutal Carmageddon, one of the earliest examples of open-world sandboxes, which had you wrecking cars and running over little old ladies for fun.

It looks like it could be coming back.

A mysterious countdown timer, set to conclude on the first of next month, has appeared on Carmageddon.com, the series’ official site. It’ll be the first game in the series since 2000’s Carmageddon: Total Destruction Racing 2000. The original games were considered too violent for many territories, forcing the developers to alter he game for different regions. Pedestrians (who could be immolated, dismembered and mashed) were changed to be green-slimed zombies or black-oiled robots.

Carmageddon was co-published by SCi, who got swallowed by Eidos, who in turn got swallowed up by Square Enix. With SE’s current focus on its western portfolio, it’s incredible likely we’ll be seeing word of a new Carmageddon, just over a week later than armageddon itself was due.
