Jiggly bits for Final Fantasy

There were plenty of things wrong with Final Fantasy XIII – linear game play, irritating characters, boring plot.  However, I didn’t think anyone thought the thing missing from FFXIII was jiggly boobs.  Apparently, I was wrong.

I’ll admit it, when Snow was injured and shirt-less, I was a happy gamer.  However, for the most part, Final Fantasy is a series about emotional connections, amazing characters and epic stories.  Not anymore, it would seem.

When Lightning returns, she will be back and bigger than ever.  Yup, she got a boob job while she was away.  Not only will we see her going from a C to a D, but she’s also getting a touch of DOA physics.  Nobuhiro Goto, the character modeling designer went so far as saying:

Yes, her chest jiggles. Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does (laughs). By the way, Since Lightning swings her arm when you change her weapon in the menu screen, that’s a recommended action for sure-fire jiggling! To see it even better it could be useful to equip a small shield. Look forward to it!

Really?  Look forward to some unnecessary sexualization of a strong female character?  The only thing wrong with Lightning originally was that she was boring and stiff – not physically but emotionally!  Giving her bouncy boobs won’t change anything.  How does this fix the fundamental problems with this current iteration of the game?  This is just debasing and sad.  Social sharing for killing bosses, boobies with realistic jiggle – who do they think is the target audience for this game?!  I think the time has finally come for me to hang up my fangirl status – how can I be a fan of Final Fantasy when they move in this direction, boobs first.

Bigger boobs = bigger profits…apparently. So sayeth the “adult actresses” as well as “exotic dancers” I have had conversations with. But seriously – why change a strong female character in such an unneeded sexual way? And then going on about it in that fassion? It looses its “specialness” if everyone does it!

I don’t know that I would call FF a classy game series, maybe up until a point yeah, their earlier titles could be called art if you asked me, but anymore it seems like the real final fantasy franchise has been dead for a long time and what we get now is a company that is slapping the name of an old game series onto subpar products to generate sales because they know people will continue to buy them based of the name alone

The ff series should have quit after 7, I have tried to play 8-10, but there is 0 comparison to the old games that made the series amazing, watching my friend play though the original us releases was what got me into games for more than just beating up my sister and ripping her spine out in mortal kombat, but man, I can’t stand these new ones, with the exception of ffXI. I was addicted to XI, not proud of it, but at least I can say “oh, you played vanilla wow back when the game was hard? that’s cute”. It would be awesome to see the new ff-mmo take over as the new reigning mmo, the down fall of xi was casual gamers wanting easy mode and jumping ship to play wow, but the wow players seem to be getting a little tired of the constant dumbing down of raids, pandas, dailies and trolls, in addition to blizzard constantly changing class mechanics to appease forum whiners

How can you have a strong female character who is boring and stiff? Those pieces in the article baffle me. If you have a boring and stiff character there is nothing to be allude to them being strong in the first place. At least nothing making you believe the character is alive to display such characteristics. At that point they are merely being directed; like lifeless actors/props within their world by their very real creators.

really? she was strong, strong in will and strong in character. to bear the fate of the world on her shoulders, to grow as an individual, learning to love and fighting to take back what was stolen from her…that are characteristics of a strong individual, but her character was stiff and had boring dialogue , but that doesn’t change her core characteristics, all of which has nothing to do with her physical appearance …….

I haven’t played the game so my comment is solely based on how the author has described her which is boring and stiff. But based on what you’ve provided it sounds like Lightning indeed was merely a marionette in the events surrounding her.

I guess the question for me becomes is she a strong character because she conveyed (in a believable way) to show enough emotion, whether subtle or overt to drive her actions to meet the challenges of as you stated: grow as an individual, learn to love and fighting to take back what was stolen; or was she merely scripted to do the aforementioned? I say scripted because maybe the developers didn’t provide enough things to occur to that would flesh out her decision making process and perhaps just did a point A to point B approach regarding her resolve.

Maybe she came out so bland because her character wasn’t challenged in ways to make her reactions believable from the get go; to really make her “act” out. And not don’t really mean her at this point I mean the writing of her character. Basically the story. Not saying this games does but sometimes they do fall into this “scripted” trap.

To me if the character is totally flat, boring stiff, unconvincing, I find that conveyance of personal strength hard to achieve as if done so in believable way.

That probably didn’t make sense but I tried. Again never played the game but I do enjoy a good story and “look” for these sort of things.

To me Cloud was a weak dude who clearly got stronger as the game progressed and had decent pacing to allow the player to see it unfold in a natural way. And provided settings and circumstances that showed Cloud’s evolution by accepting who he really was. Still a classic turnaround of any FF character. At least for me.

Nice Nice! 🙂 you provide a nice viewpoint as to what to what exactly makes a strong character. Do their innate, predetermined characteristics determine whether or not said character is strong or does the story play a role too in making us BELIEVE the character is strong, very interesting indeed. I for one believe it is a little bit of both. I still believe that Lightning is a strong character brought down with really bad dialogue, though, as i did play the game, I could recall instances where her strength was displayed beautifully. But I do agree with you actually, you could say you have a strong character, you know, one with immovable will, who has the spirit of a thousand men, to actually be portrayed that way, to make us believe that they are ‘Strong’, well that is another story. I apologize for not segmenting my comment, it’s really early and I am too lazy for that 🙂 lol really interesting point you made indeed

Question for you Zoe, when games break and surpass the uncanny valley, and begin to utilize more complex and realistic physics engines, AI etc…, will the realistic movement of body parts be objectification?

Not that I consider this game to be part of that question, clearly it’s not. But, I mean in the future….what then? Will every woman and man with realistic body physics be objectification? And what about the fat guys in games now? They jiggle? Is that demeaning to fat people (Bob, from Tekken 6, for example). What about a fat woman, who…naturally would have massive mammaries?

I guess my question is, would it have been less objectifying, had they simply added it in and not made it a bullet point like they’ve done here? Or is it simply that you feel that type of realism is objectification? I mean…that’s reality….breasts, fat, balls, mens junk….they move when you move. That’s…just how it is. Again, not sticking up for FF, because I personally think there’s a ton of other areas they could be concentrating on, rather than breast physics.

But..when we get to a point where that kind of realism is standard in games (and it will come, some day), is that objectification as well?

I think it is objectification because of the way they are doing. When the characters are made to move in specific ways in order to make the characters boobs flap around. When they specifically increase the size of the breasts just for this feature. Then it becomes objectification.

Tomb Raider had realistic boobie action, and not one person would accuse it of objectification (the new Tomb Raider).

I know, that’s why I wasn’t talking about this game in particular, because they actually pointed this out like it’s something to behold. My query was more for the future. Eventually, we all know it’s going to be standard that realistic muscle/fat/hair etc… movement will literally be expected in every game. To such a degree where nobody will even care (It’s like caring about seeing breasts bounce as you walk down the road).

What then? Will everyone look at it the same way, or will it be viewed in the same light as reality? Some women have jiggly boobs…it happens. Or, how about this scenario….what if the game is made entirely by women? Or a woman is the lead? What then? Is that objectification? Or would that then be considered empowerment?

I’m merely curious, I don’t honestly care either way. If anyone actually thinks sexuality won’t have a role in games for many many years to come…well, they’re pretty stupid. And if people have a problem with games that do such things, my guess is they won’t be instituting a policy of mandatory purchase anytime soon.

I’m cool with physics engines, but then everything must look realistic – flesh can ripple when i hit someone with my sword or shoot with my gun, and everyone must be jiggly in all the wobbly bits. It’s not objectification if it’s applied consistently to all characters regardless of gender. Also, not all women have big boobs – if you’re going to add realistic jiggle, how about adding realistic shapes and proportions?

Do what a lot of us Final Fantasy fans from back of the day did. Follow MistWalker Studios. They took the Spirit of FF with them, and every single one of their games has been the quality we keep expecting from Square (and haven’t received for over 10 years).

I don’t get these “jiggly” effects the Japanese give their lady game character’s boobs. It looks just wrong. I remember playing DoA5 and thinking that all these chicks must be in water because no breasts move like that, ever. Or I’ve been staring at it all wrong since I was a 9 year old ignorant boy.

I honestly don’t get it, but that must be because I’m not Japanese. Or maybe the Japs just don’t know what real boobs look like and how they’re supposed to move.

Interesting.. In that picture she looks more like a B than a C..

Anyway, her breasts are irrelevant to the story. She felt kind of androgynous to me. I think they did a good job creating a character that wasn’t just a sexual object, despite the fact she lacks personality.
