And in climbing to that lofty spot above the plethora of Xbox Live Arcade titles over the last few months, the game also weaselled its way deeper into my heart. Well, to be fair, it had done that three seconds into my initial playthrough, but still, this is great news for Playdead Studios.
Microsoft’s Phil Spencer (vice-president of Microsoft Games Studios) just went on record to say that LIMBO has indeed sold the most copies during the Xbox Summer of Arcade promotion “by a long stretchâ€.
It was up against some much loved and well known franchises as well, such as Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. So good news for a new IP and perhaps a foreshadowing (oh how apt!) of things to come on Xbox Live? It’s surely a reassuring result for other indie developers keen on breaking into the gaming scene to see a debut title achieve such a fantastic result. Even Phil himself is hoping this is setting a precedent : “It’s changing though […] We see that in the market, that it’s becoming less about iconic IP that people know and it’s becoming more diverse.â€
If this means more gems like LIMBO wondering their way onto the XLA, then I’m all for this shift in market preference.
