Beavis-butthead

Uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh. Ehehehehehehehe. If you grew up in the late 1990s and could stay awake long enough, you’d have caught the most controversial pairing of genetics run awry during a midnight showing on SABC3. Or if you were lucky enough to afford gold sheets of toilet paper, on DSTV which had access to MTV.

Listen, Beavis and Butthead by today’s standards, are actually quite tame. The tale of two…organisms managing to actually survive in normal society, while possessing the combined intelligence of a half-eaten avocado was iconic stuff back then. Especially when they let loose about various music videos, pre-dating the scourge of YouTube reaction videos by several years.

At their prime, Beavis and Butt-Head were everywhere. TV. A really fantastic movie. Music videos. Talk shows even. And of course, video games. You might have played as the GWAR fanatics on a ticket quest on the Sega Megadrive, or even engaged in some point ‘n click action on PC as you navigated through your high school. But did you ever spend a token in an arcade to control the two perpetually chuckling dweebs? Probably not.

And that’s because at least one Beavis and Butt-Head arcade game never saw the light of day. Back in 1996, Atari was working on a stand that featured the MTV icons, but it was a rather poor game that was never released to the general fart-knockers of the public. Only 12 of these machines were ever finished, left to die a slow death and gather dust. Until the Galloping Ghost Arcade got their hands on one, according to Arcade Heroes and Kotaku.

Featuring the finest 3DO hardware of its time, the Galloping Ghost Arcade fixed it up and placed it in their collection. To get the parts necessary for it to be fixed up, they had to cannibalise an old 3DO console to get the Beavis and Butt-Head arcade system working. Fascinating stuff, to keep a pair of classic bungholes alive. Hehehehehehehe. Uhhhuhhuhuhuhhuh.
