Mad Max will have a sense of mystery around it

Growing up, Mad Max was one of several films that shaped me, thanks to the SABC being broke and having to show really old movies during the day.We never did find out how Australia and the rest of the world got ragnarocked, and don’t look to Avalanche’s upcoming Mad Max game to answer that question either.

“Obviously we want to maintain that sense of mystery about what has happened in the world, and what is the history of every place that we visit,” Senior Game Designer Emil Kraftling said to AusGamers.

And while some of it is things that we have explained in development — either on our own or through the consulting with George Miller — while we know it, we don’t spell it out to people, but it affects how certain areas are constructed and what we find in certain areas.

There’s a lot there for the players to discover if nothing else. They won’t get the answer, but they will be able to look at a place and start thinking about how it came to be like that.

One example of these apocalyptically bitch-slapped areas that Kraftling gave an example of, was a zone he called the Great White. “It’s the old seabed, and there’s all this trash and the treasures of the old world that were buried at the bottom of the sea that is now exposed, or semi-exposed,” Kraftling said.

That’s a really interesting location to be in and explore, and see all of these things that when you first come across them, you might be like ‘oh, this is an old rock’, and then you realize what was here before was maybe a reef, or something that was very different in the old world than it is in this one.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff there for us as developers as well as for players, and what we know and what the players know will not necessarily be the same. In some instances, I know myself that we have some stuff in the world, and it’s not described anywhere why it is how it is, but I’m making educated guesses as to why it is this way.

Mad Max is slated for release on PC and next-gen consoles.

…at what point do we stop using the term “Next-gen” when referring to Xbone and PS4.

P.S. This game is on my Want-list, looks interesting, also loved the movies.

Man I would LOVE this game to have a Fallout feel to it!

But what is a Fallout feel without Fallout?

In all seriousness though. It needs to be a faster paced Fallout with crazy cars and a GTA V sized world. And random events. Both Fallout and Skyrim lacked enough random events.

Agreed. Though they also need a strong story. I loved the movies, would be a shame if they killed it!

Story is usually quite a plus. I want some co-op play too.

Well Borderlands did a damn good job with the story.

And they had co-op. Great game that.

So was your mom. 😛 BOOM!

Rage was not bad, just had a crappy ending. If they mix a Fallout 3 world with Rage-like FPS that would be really cool I think.

perhaps… Rage was still utter shit though.

I’m cautiously optimistic for this game. Everything we’ve heard so far sounds pretty good.

      ‘cautiously optimistic’
I think that’s about the most accurate statement I’ve heard for my take on new games these days.
