No expansions planned for Guild Wars 2

1 min read

It’s been a couple of months since Guild Wars 2, the subscription-less MMO that has developed a sizeable fan base. Thing is, by now most people have completed various quests, with several characters already. So they need some new content. Well, don’t count on that happening anytime soon, as there are zero expansions planned for Guild Wars 2 at the moment.

Speaking to IGN, game director Colin Johanson explained that the focus right now was on the live experience of the game, and that developer ArenaNet couldn’t afford to distract themselves with extra content work of that scale. Not yet anyway. "Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future," Johanson said.

We don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got.

Guild Wars Uno had three expansive packs released for that game, and with the possibility of an extra payday, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine ArenaNet eventually developing that kind of new content. Content that will grow the game into an inevitable sequel, Johanson explained;

We want to be able to have teams that are literally developing new, innovative features that change the way that you play our game and grow that experience so it literally feels like you don’t leave Guild Wars 2; Guild Wars 2 becomes Guild Wars 2.5 or Guild Wars 3 and it continues to grow.

What do you think? Is Guild Wars 2 still exciting enough to warrant playtime at the moment, or are you bored of certain active events already?

    My interest is waning, I don’t log on and do my dailies anymore, I don’t complete my monthlies. If I log its for a couple minutes and I click around a bit then log off. I think I am just burnt out from GW 2 played A huge amount in Jan and beginning of Feb, I think this is just a break. Also without raid bosses what is there to work for, fractals just starts becoming the same thing again and again and again.

      Agreed. Doesn’t feel like there is an visible progression, or something really EPIC you can do. Raid bosses and viable dungeons would be good.

    I for one am loving it! Still have loads of content to get through with my characters (only one at level 80) and the new living story seems quite interesting. There’s always something new every few months to keep one busy and interested. There are many events, personal quests, dungeons etc to keep one busy and with so many very different classes I’m not bored yet! (I can see one getting burnt out by playing too much but I wouldn’t say you’d get bored with all the content at the moment, imo)

    Still plugging in everyday. It’s becoming a problem in terms of other releases now. It’s just so easy to get taken away for a few hours in that game

    Got to 80. Quit
    No end game content and no one here can tell me otherwise because farming better gear serves no purpose for me when i’ve finished the game and it doesnt benefit me in anyway.

    Played it since the release and I am a huge fan of it. 🙂 The fact that they won’t release an expansion soon doesn’t mean that they will not release new content, which happens to a certain degree on a monthly basis. If you check in the forums then the competitive WvW (world vs world vs world) game play is expected to get some new structure soon! 😀 I cannot wait to wipe the ground with some Frenchies and Germans! 😉 /salute Desolation
