Play Civilization: Beyond Earth for free this weekend

It’s time for Steam to show what gaming should be about. Sure, you might not be a fan of DRM, in which case Steam is the devil. However, the way Steam handles its free weekends makes me incredibly happy.

For the next couple days, you can play Civilization: Beyond Earth and Saint’s Row IV for free on Steam. Obviously, as the newer game, Civ is going to get a lot more attention, although Saint’s Row is also a fun and popular game. However, more people are hesitant about Civilization and if it’s worth the money, so now they will have the chance to see for themselves.

Speaking of money, the games will also cost less if you buy them during the free weekend. Civ is marked down 40%, making the strategic future only $30. Meanwhile, Saint’s Row IV is a whopping 75% off, bringing it down to $5. You could even splurge on the Game of the Century Edition and spend $7.50.

I enjoyed Civilization: Beyond Earth when I reviewed it last year. It has subsequently gotten some awesome balancing tweaks to make it much more enjoyable – I played it for many hours over the holiday period and loved losing many hours with all my various victories and defeats. It’s not just a re-skin of Civilization V; it requires unique strategies and is a wholly different experience. There are fewer achievements for the game, but most people barely scratched the surface of Civ achievements anyway.

I really like this offering from Steam. Play the game, see if you like it, and if you do, buy it at a discount. Isn’t that what gaming should be about? Try before you buy because they are so confident that you will love the game and want to play more after the weekend is over. If you’re still on the fence about this one, I hope you take the time to play it this weekend, even if just to come back and tell me that I’m an idiot for liking the game.

Not a Civ fan, but since I saw the gameplay video and the research web, I wanted to try this. At first, my graphics card didn’t make the cut, then it failed and got replaced. Now, I don’t have the CAP available to download it. Sigh, need to move this year to a place with a hard line, or need wireless data to become much cheaper 🙁

Not really a crap game, just not brilliant. It all feels the same to me. BUT I think with one or two expansions it will be very, very good.
