Yes we're South African and proud of it

We are a gaming website, there are no two ways about that and all we ever do is post gaming news. This is what we love and we have no intention of changing that but I saw this video on the weekend and simply couldn’t not do my part to help.

The video below was made by the class of Sinenjongo High School down in the Western Cape and in it the kids very politely and intelligently ask our mobile operators in South Africa to please make access to Wikipedia free for all people to access.

They want to learn, they want to study and they want to succeed. Unfortunately their school does not have a library and the cost of data locally is insane. However 90% of them have cell phones and if they could access Wikipedia for free on their phones they would be able to study and learn how to become successful members of society.

This message rings really loud with me as Lazygamer itself was only created as I needed an outlet from studying and I know how important it is to further your education which can only happen if you succeed in high school.

MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom Mobile have the technology to grant access to certain sites without charging and I urge them to listen to the kids of our country and grant them this wish. If you agree please share this on Facebook, like the official page,  or hit the button below to tweet about it.

I want to do my little bit just to try help at least make the companies respond, if enough people bring it up we can’t be ignored.

Oh and on the off chance that Wikipedia reads this, please stop asking for donations and just use banners on the site. It would save us all a lot of trouble.

This video and initiative is more than a year old. A year ago most of the “service” providers were behind it and looking into “making it happen”.

Good on Lazygamer to keep it going.

Currently Cell C doesn’t charge for data when using Mxit and through Mxit student/learners can access Wikipedia, text books and past exam papers.

That is correct. No charges for Mxit usage on CellC and there is a Wiki app on Mxit. Thus, free use 🙂 Well spotted HvR! Apart from the Wikipedia app on Mxit there are other apps geared towards education on Mxit.
