Pokémon is moving into Skylanders territory

1 min read

The hard thing about setting a trend in gaming, is that you’re going to have a flood of “inspirations” coming for a slice of your pie in the years to come. Skylanders did just that, as now Disney is attempting to also woo a younger portion of the market with their very own range of licensed figures and games. And now, it looks like some iconic pocket monsters want in as well.

Near Field Communication is a big thing with those games, but f there is one thing that Nintendo has going for them when they make a move into that market, is that their Wii U tablet controller already uses similar technology.

What that means, is that the upcoming Pokémon Scramble U which is Japan Exclusive at the moment, will only need to sell figures of the battling monsters, instead of full kits that include a figurine scanner.

Figures for the game go on sale from April 24 at licensed Pokémon Center shops according to Kotaku (I’m not making this up), and cost ¥200 (R19.25) for a single Pokémon. Right now, that’s six figures being launched, plus a special legendary type by the sounds of things.

Players can raise the little bastards much like in previous Pokémon games, and use them in the game. There’s no word yet if Nintendo is planning on bringing this game to a Western audience, but I wouldn’t be too surprised to see an E3 announcement for it.

As for parents who are already mortgaging their organs to fulfil that Skylanders and Disney Infinity need that their kids have? I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry to bring you this news.
