First look at Prey gameplay

If you remember the original Prey (or better yet, the promises of the open-world, bounty hunting cancelled sequel) and are praying that the recent announced reboot rekindles some of that, you’re probably going to be incredibly disappointed with the game’s first gameplay trailer. That’s not to say it’s not an exciting slice of footage, but it’s hard not to wonder why it bears the Prey name at all. Because despite being interesting, it’s certainly not Prey.

What it is, however, is an interesting looking amalgamation of ideas you’re likely to find in games like Dead Space, BioShock and hints of that cancelled X-COM shooter 2K was working on once upon a time. As the YouTube description points out, you play as the first human able to tap into mysterious alien powers,  trapped on a space station inhabited by creepy looking creatures made of smoke. It’s definitely got deep horror survival roots, despite the glimmers of fast-paced shooting.

There’s no real look at how your newfound alien powers impact combat, but it’s not a stretch to imagine a small handful of powers being made available to you that work in tandem with the core shooting (much like Plasmids in BioShock or powers in Dishonored). It’s also doesn’t seems like Prey is as far away as the fully CG E3 trailer led us to believe, and I’d be shocked if Bethesda took longer than a year to put it out.

It’s certainly not the most revealing trailer by any stretch, but I must say I’m surprised we got any this soon after E3. Quakecon is just getting into full swing, so we’re likely to get a lot more from Bethesda regarding their entire (expanding) library of games over the weekend. Who knows – maybe a lot of these questions I’m asking of Prey won’t take long to be answered. It’s out in 2017 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

What I still don’t understand is why call this Prey? Why use an existing IP but have none of that canon fit in? It is like making a WW2 movie and calling it Star Wars Episode 8.

Easy: marketing. We overestimate how many people follow games as attentively as use. Slapping Prey onto this gives the game existing credibility, even if it has nothing to do with the first game. It’s all for marketing
