Saints Row may have been a Grand Theft Auto clone, but Saints Row 2 managed to fill a niche by offering a straight shot of nothing but fun, which some people believe GTA did not. I personally did not enjoy the first one but Saints row 2 does have some hooks. Now a third edition is on the way.
In an interview with play.tm, Saints Row 2 associate producer Dan Sutton took the time to confirm that work has already begun on Saints Row 3.
“We’ve already started work on Saints Row 3, and we have a new direction we want to go in with that which we of course can’t talk about,” Sutton said. “We wrap up a lot in this one. There’s no frustration.”
Sutton also discussed Saints Row 2 downloadable content, saying that they were definitely looking at “bigger stuff.” Although nothing has been announced, Sutton hopes to include multiplayer maps, another story arc and new characters.
As for the pressure of competing with $100 million GTA4, Sutton said, “Its crazy when you have two programmers and they have nine or 10. Our programmers were like, ‘wow, we’re good’. Its the way things are going, that’s for sure.”
Sutton went on to jokingly promise a $600 million budget for Saints Row 3, which would most likely be enough to hire at least one more programmer. Until then, there’s always time for some more base jumping in Saints Row 2.
I don’t know if it’s right of me but I seem to have a soft spot for games where you can see that the developers have really tried. Taking into account they only had 2 programmers on Saints Row 2, they did a damn fine job. If Saints Row 3 lives up to what’s been promised we may finally see a game to really challenge GTA for it’s throne.
