Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a huge game, packed with far too much content. No really, I’ve sunk in a bunch of hours into the sandbox stealth world, and I’m only around 21% complete. Even Geoff, who has played a fair amount more than I have, is only on 25% or so. As if we didn’t have enough to keep us busy, we now have Metal Gear Online to look forward to.

It’s coming to consoles on October 6th (early 2016 for PC), and will be free to those who own a copy of The Phantom Pain. Personally, I’ve never seen Metal Gear Solid as a multiplayer game, not one bit. Then I watched this new gameplay video straight out of Tokyo Game Show, and I understand exactly why I converted to Kojimaism recently .

The whole video is likely scripted, but still, I won’t even pretend that I don’t think that looks like a whole bunch of fun! I can use the Fulton to extract enemies? Holy crap, count me in! The futuristic balloon system isn’t just for comedy value either. In the one game mode shown above, Bounty Hunter, it actually plays a key role.

Both teams start out with X amount of tickets. Dispatching enemies will deplete their overall total. However, racking up a good kill-streak will place a bounty on a player’s head. If an enemy is able to down and Fulton that enemy (note: NOT kill), their bounty value is then added to the enemy’s ticket total. What this means is that the game can swing in anybody’s favour at any moment.

Honestly, it looks rather amazing, and that’s not just the fanboy in me speaking (I hope). I’m quite excited to see what other game modes are on offer!

What do you think? Does Metal Gear Online appeal to you at all? I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

So they published a demo, then MGSV and now an on-line game and they wonder why the last 3rd of the single player was cut? AND THE EXECUTIVES were pissed that it spent longer than 5 years in production?… while building a new engine?

I BET YOU the mission structure of the game was meant to be DLC episodic content. Kind of a double edged sword, thanks to Konami leaving the gaming market we kind of got all the missions on disc.

My mind is still in a boggle how a 29 year swan song can end like it did.

Agreed. I think it’s indicative of what the industry is like these days.

I suppose when the project was given the green light, KONAMI was a totally different company back in 2009. What a risk, Not even Apocalypse Now development hell comes close.

But the good thing is that the on-line MGS games of the past have always been a huge success. So I understand why most of the development costs for the game went to that instead.

But to create a brand spanking new kick ass engine and then…

They better sell it off as middle ware. Its about time the Unreal Engine had a good competitor.

No wonder Kojima buggered off. Imagine taking a piece of art and doing that to it?

I think it was Kojima and Konami. Kojima as a perfectionist came across as too over ambitions and those poor executives must have had a hard time controlling him. They want profit not art. Anyway we should be lucky for what we got. It could have ended worse.

But dam, as a gamer who classifies my hobby as an art form its sad to see that its nothing more than a money spinner.

Damn straight. I hope we see more of this happening in the future. Look at the Witcher III and the passion that went into that. That’s called art, and fan service!

for the few hardcore game connoisseurs. The other 90% of gamers are happy dropping $60 on the counter because its their call of duty to buy a product based on the cover design.
