Sneaky additions to the 2.10 Firmware update

58 second read

This is a strange one, you know that new firmware update that you downloaded onto your PS3 that did nothing apart from upgrade your Blu-Ray to version 1.1 and allow DivX and XviD playback?

Well it seems to have had a few more things hidden inside it…

They have added a planet music visualiser which looks pretty awesome, just press square when listening to some music.

They have also fixed the video thumbnails that didn’t play properly previously but they left the biggest thing for last.

You can now remotely play your disk based PS1 games through your PSP… Yes you can now sit in your toilet playing an original classic straight through your PSP… that is quite cool….

So why on earth did Sony not even include these features in it’s feature list for the update? The only reason I can think of is that they didn’t have time to completely test these features so wasn’t 100% convinced on their stability?

Yeah, I read about the video thumbnails thing and was quite surprised. Mine have worked as intended since I don’t know – never knew there was a problem.

The new visualisation is cool though.

PS1 discs? Does anybody still own them? Hell, does anybody still ‘PLAY’ them? The only PS1 game I honestly could conceivably play is MGS but nohoho, I tried that and my eyes went into a fit 🙂 . I’m sorry, between this and backwards compatability, people like holding onto things they never use, in my opinion.

Not sure if this was mentioned in a previous item but they also have added a pitch control for your voice in chat – so basically you can change the sound of your voice- I’m not sure of the reasons for this besides novelty value.

Thats the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. They would never intentionally release buggy code. They would simply have left the features out if they had doubts about the stability.
    Try again…

Oh no I have said many dumber things… check the archives 😀

Sony and Microsoft and all other development houses have a history of releasing buggy code. Remember this Blu-Ray 1.1 ability had to be released before January due to the new movies coming out and they may have found themselves running out of time.

Hey it’s a theory… why would a company not announce good features?

Maybe it was easter eggs – for Christmas!!!

Or maybe, under promise and over deliver?

    Well, it worked, nobody’s complaining…

Just incase anyone is having trouble playing Xvid on PS3. I uninstalled all the funny Codec Packs including TVersity. Installed the Xvid only binary, which includes support for Divx and now my PS3 is streaming everything. Good bye XBOX 😛

Here is the link just incase:
