I know, I know, I’m always talking about how Sony loves indie developers. Most of you don’t care because you aren’t hipsters like me. But for the rest of you – Sony says that self-publishing on the PS4 is easier than ever, allowing each developer to publish games.
According to Sony:
“Every single individual developer is a publisher as far as we’re concerned. We don’t separate, we don’t segregate indies from traditional publishers.”
This means that indies can do promotions on the PlayStation Blog, twitter and Facebook, as well as controlling their release dates on the PS4. Additionally, indie developers can decide if they want feedback on their games:
“In the past we used to provide developers feedback on the gameplay of their game. We still do that today if you want. You need to a tick a box and say ‘I’d be happy to listen to what Sony has to say.’ If you like it you can implement it in your game, if you don’t you can completely disregard it. We really believe that as a self-publishing company, the final quality of your product is with you. And no company is set up to deliver a bad game.”
I suppose this means that we can expect plenty more support for indie games on the PS4. I’m actually really excited about this. There are tons of great indie games out there. But more than that, there are a lot of mediocre indie games out there that could use some help and guidance to become great games. Maybe this will help indie developers grow and create some really innovative new games – someone has to be the hipster and think of cool things first.
