Sony's 'No Backward Compatibility' Excuse for PS3 Sim

PS3 Slim

I’m sure you guys remember that Sony used to boast the inclusion of ‘Backward compatibility’ in their consoles. You may remember that a while after the PS3 was released, they stopped boasting. The reason being is because they stopped including it in the PS3.

Now many gamers have been hoping that the rise of the PS3 Slim would bring backward compatibility… uhm… back. Unfortunately thats not the case. For those of you guys that appreciate the details and or being smoke-screened by ‘the corporates’, here’s their excuse… I mean reason as quoted by SCEA’s Director Of Marketing (John Koller):

“Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3,” … “there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]”… “And it’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3.”

Well I guess the truth is that the disappointment was expected. Asking for a PS3 Slim, Price Drops and Backward Compatibility would be like asking for a foursome with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Bettie from The Flintstones Cartoons – I guess it would rip apart the very fabric of space and time.

backwards compatibility will be done via software in the future. its a cost saving measure to avoid licensing fee’s for the hardware that was used in the first ps3’s to come out.
