Yesterday a forum post regarding The Crew caught my attention. The post in question seemed to confirmed that Ubisoft’s racer would have it’s frame rate capped to 30FPS on all platforms, including PC. Now that’s both true and not so true, and Ubisoft have cleared it up for us.
I received an email this morning from Ubisoft’s PR department, clearly explaining the situation. Yes, The Crew currently runs with a 30FPS cap on PC, but it seems that will only be so for the beta. Ubisoft wanted to provide players with a smooth experience, hence the decision to cap it for this brief testing period. The frame rate will, however, be unlocked by the time The Crew reaches shelves. At least, for PC it will be.
The Crew will still only run at 30FPS on all consoles. Curiously, it seems that even the Xbox 360 version of the game will manage to reach 1080p. I couldn’t expect the last-gen version to look as good as, say, the Xbox One version, but seeing the two run at the same framerate and resolution is somewhat rare. Here’s what Ubisoft had to say to us.
This 30 FPS cap actually only applies to the Beta. The game will run in 1080p with 30 frames per second on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360. For the PC version, we are aiming at offering the option to play with either 60 frames per second or 30 frames per second.
So if yesterday’s frame rate cap news was a bit of a deal breaker for you, then you can safely put The Crew back on your radar. That’s if you’re still willing to put up with uPlay and its own brand of nonsense.
The Crew will be released on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PC later this year. There will also be a console beta later in September.
