A week ago, I told you about the semi-finalists for the Heroes of the Storm ultimate fan art contest. After much deliberation, dart throwing, pinning tails on a donkey, twister, and pulling names out of a hat*, Blizzard have finally chosen the top 3 submissions. Did the one I like grab top honours?
Of course not! My artistic intelligence is equivalent to a perished paper cup at the aftermath of a concert! Sam Didier, Senior Art Director of Heroes of the Storm on the other hand, knows what’s up. Here’s the image he felt was worthy of being crowned the best.
The winning artist, TamplierPainter, walks away with with some pretty sweet loot:
- A framed sketch by Sam Didier, Senior Art Director for Heroes of the Storm, inspired by the winning entry
- A framed print of the 1st place entry signed by the Heroes of the Storm Creative Team
- $6,000 USD
- $250 in Battle.net Balance (USD) and a signed boxed copy of Heroes of the Storm
- 8,000 DeviantArt Points
- 1-year Premium Membership to DeviantArt.com
Here’s why Didier chose his piece:
The Lightbringer against the Demon Hunter. The rendering of this piece is unbelievable. It looks like an oil painting done by one of the old masters. The sheer power of the paladin’s attack is balanced beautifully by the elegance of Valla’s riposte. I especially enjoy that the artist chose to create Uther and Valla wearing their Master armor variants. Another point of interest to me is Grimskull Nazeebo lurking in the background with his gargantuan. Although he hails from the Diablo-verse like the Demon Hunter, it is unclear to the me which side he is actually fighting for and, depending on the outcome of this battle, the victor may still have another battle on their hands.
Here are the two runner ups, which in my mind, are equally impressive:
Second Place: Kuzinskiy
Third Place: Samarskiy
Wait a minute, that Kuzinskiy name rings a bell. Hang on, he’s the same bloke who won the trip to Blizzard HQ for his submission into the Diablo III art contest last year. He was so close to winning yet again! Blizzard should just offer him a job already.
I hope Blizzard host more competitions like this in future. Perhaps a StarCraft II Legacy of the Void one is on the cards? We’ll have to wait and see.
*All made up. Blizzard obviously chose the winners legitimately
