The Last Guardian designer talks about next gen development

The Last Guardian was meant to be the shining light on the PlayStation 3 after it was announced at E3 in 2009. However 4 years and countless technical issues later we still haven’t seen hide or hair of the once exciting prospect.

The latest rumours are that the game will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Edge were recently talking to the lead designer, Fumito Ueda, about everything other than The Last Guardian as apparently there is a secrecy clause in his contract.

So they decided to ask him about how development is going on the next gen platforms.

Videogames and technology are inextricable from one another. It will be like that for the next few years at least. Compared with the early days, game engines’ creation and editing tools have given the artists and designers [greater]control. You will be able to control expression in finer detail. And I hope the speed of iteration will increase.

He hopes the speed of iteration increases? Well maybe that because you never finished your game, but for the rest of us who have sat through annualised titles I’m hoping the speed really doesn’t increase.

Could you imagine two full Call of Duties a year?

Edge also asked him about the game he isn’t allowed to talk about and he does state that his design work on The Last Guardian actually finished quite a while ago so it does sound like the developers behind the project are the ones holding everything up.

Honestly The Last Guardian has been in development hell for too long now and the only humane thing to do would be to shut it down and remember it as a great possibility instead of a Duke Nukem Forever.

Oh yes, in the old-gen days, TLG was used effectively as ammo to win the flame wars.

Prepare yourself, The Last Guardian is coming! -___________-

This game is most probably being delayed because they wanted to do something bigger and perhaps the Ps3 didn’t have the power but the Ps4 surely does.. I mean maybe they wanted the fur and the feathers to blow in the wind and perhaps they needed a powerful physics engine to handle the destruction of the guardian in parts. I mean for all we know the game may include fighting beasts similar to Shadow of the colluses using this beast.. You know some things are worth the wait but that rule doesn’t apply to Duke Nukem games.

Probably best to just let it go & move on. For it to take so long means it was either poorly planned from the start or else they’ve been constantly chopping & changing during development. Which does not bode well for the final product. Just ask 3D Realms.
