Mortal Kombat History (3)

Welcome to part 2 of our look back at the story of Mortal Kombat! If you missed the first part, here’s a link to it for you. The story continues, as Outworld began plotting to merge with Earthrealm, using Mortal Kombat, deceit and a little bit of trickery along the way.

Mortal Kombat History (1)

Edenia had been conquered, and Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn was now finally ready to wage war on Earthrealm. His passage blocked by Queen Sindel’s sacrifice, Shao Kahn had no choice but to submit to the rules of Mortal Kombat if he wanted to add the most sought-after of realms to his kingdom. Tasking the sorceror Shang Tsung with winning the ten tournaments that would be required for Outworld’s invasion to be recognised by the Elder Gods, the vile trickster soon met his match.

Raiden had begun preparing for Kahn’s arrival, forming the White Lotus Society in an effort to find a champion who could stand between Earthrealm and Outworld. The Great Kung Lao rose to the challenge, handing Shang Tsung his defeat saving his realm for another fifty years. Lao would show mercy to Tsung, but this gesture would come back to haunt him when the sorceror returned with a new Outworld champion: The mighty Shokan warrior Goro.

Towering above Lao, Goro would kill the legendary warrior in Mortal Kombat and pave the way for Outworld’s conquest across the next eight tournaments as well. Only a miracle could save Earthrealm from falling to Kahn. A Shaolin monk whose destiny would call him to be Earthrealm’s greatest hero in its darkest hour…

Sub-Zero establishes his own myth

Mortal Kombat History (7)

Two years before the decisive Mortal Kombat could begin, Shang Tsung began making preparations in case Outworld lost. With Sindel’s soul trapped in Kahn’s realm but still capable of providing a protective barrier that the warlord could not pass through, only the resurrection of the Edenian queen could allow Kahn unfettered access to Earthrealm.

Quan Chi would approach Tsung, offering him the knowledge needed to help him revive Sindel if the sorcerer provided details as to where Shinnok’s amulet was located. Armed with this information, Quan Chi tasked Lin Kuei ninja Sub-Zero and Shirai-Ryu shinobi Scorpion with the mission of retrieving the amulet. Battling through Earthrealm and defeating various minor elemental gods, Sub-Zero eventually found the amulet, but Quan Chi’s trickery was revealed as the ice warrior learnt of the true nature of the mystical artefact.

Mortal Kombat History (5)

Determined to retrieve it, Sub-Zero would fight through the Netherrealm and Shinnok, reclaim the amulet and seal the Netherealm threat. For a brief time at least. His adventures gaining the notice of Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero would find himself invited to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament. Seizing a chance to end the Outworld threat, the Lin Kuei grandmasters instructed Sub-Zero to enter and assassinate Shang Tsung when the opportunity presented itself.

Enter Liu Kang

Mortal Kombat History (2) (2)

The Mortal Kombat that would decide Earthrealm’s fate, was ready to begin. Raiden had assembled some of the finest warriors in the land, including special forces operative Sonya Blade, Hollywood action star Johny Cage and Shaolin monk Liu Kang. The comptition was fierce, with the battle between Scorpion and Sub-Zero being especially vicious.

Having discovered that Sub-Zero was responsible for his murder, the revenge-driven Scorpion killed his nemesis and damned his soul to the Netherrealm. Even in death, there was no escape for Sub-Zero as Quan Chi would capture his spirit and transform him into his latest Revenant warrior: The shadow shinobi, Noob Saibot.

Meanwhile, Earthrealm would prove triumphant and reset the clock on doomsday. Liu Kang defeated Goro and Shang Tsung, earning the title of Mortal Kombat champion. It would be at least another 50 years before Shao Kahn could attempt to challenge Earthrealm again, but Shang Tsung’s schemes were not over yet.

The false Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat History (2)

While Shang Tsung successfully managed to convince Shao Kahn to spare his life, a new plot was hatched. Kahn would host his own Mortal Kombat in Outworld, in an effort to break the rules of the Elder Gods and finally conquer Earthrealm. To this end, Kahn unleashed his hordes of Tarkatan warriors on Liu Kang’s Wu Shi Academy and kidnapped Sonya Blade.

Mortal Kombat History (1) (2)

Earthrealm’s warriors entered Outworld and battled against the forces assembled against them, but this was a hollow victory once all the dust had cleared. While Raiden and his allies had been distracted, Shao Kahn had succssfully managed to resurrect and corrupt Queen Sindel. The barrier between realms was broken, Shao Kahn finally walked into Earthrealm and all souls were forfeit. The third Mortal Kombat tournament, was about to begin.

The Battle for Earthrealm

Mortal Kombat History (3)

With the realms merged, and millions of souls absorbed into raging Soulnados, Shao Kahn’s ambition ran unchecked. Attempting to merge the Netherrealm into his kingdom, this plan backfired when the energies proved themselves to be too great and paved the way for Earthrealm to fight back. Rallying every warrior who was still alive, Shao Kahn would face a second defeat at the hands of Liu Kang.

Mortal Kombat History (4)

Injured and weak, the Emperor had no choice but to retreat and break his hold on the merging realities. Edenia would also find freedom in the aftermath of Kahn’s explosive defeat, with the various realms finally knowing some measure of peace after centuries of danger from Outworld.
