We have sent Sandy on a not-so-secret mission to Poland. It makes me happy that merely by stating that he’s gone to Poland, you can infer the rest of what he’s probably up to. While we wait for his cool, breaking news coverage, world maps for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have appeared.
Gamespot brought back the map images from their trip to Poland, making me wonder what Sandy will return with. Interestingly, there’s a separate map for the prologue (while players are getting used to the game) as compared with the main game. Here is the prologue map:
That already looks bigger than some world maps in games. But when it opens up into the full game, it becomes massive:
But wait, there’s more. According to the guys from Gamespot, there is also an archipelago destination that can only be visited by boat. Traveling there is one of the few instances in The Witcher 3 where you’ll encounter a loading screen. Now isn’t that just music to my ears. Another place I’m assuming we’ll get loading screens is when we leave the mortal realm. No, I don’t mean “you died” screens; these images are of the mortal realm but the game will also take place in fantastical and unnatural regions. The developers are keeping those details under wraps to avoid any spoilers, but it all sounds quite cool.
I love a nice open world map. It’s so hard to strike a balance sometimes – the game world might be intriguing but you still want to get around quickly. Then again, in The Witcher 3, so much can happen on the journey from point A to point B that many players will probably opt to never fast travel. Each gamer is unique in the way they’ll tackle the game, but it certainly is quite a massive game to consume.
