The Xbox One’s still in second place

Though the two are inextricably linked some claim that Microsoft’s decision to excise Kinect from the Xbox One, like its decision to remove the overt DRM, was motivated more by underperformance than “listening to gamers.” that could well be true. According to the NPD, Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best selling gaming hardware in the US during April – making it four months in a row.PD noted that the Xbox One is selling well, too, and even the Wii U’s not doing too badly-software wise.

“Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

“PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40% compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months. Wii U software sales were up over last year by over 80%.”

Apparently there were just  115k Xbox One’s sold in April. sony hasn;t released numbers, but seeing as they have the lead, it’s higher than that.

Overall, it’s good news because total industry sales climbed 17% year-on-year to $580.3 million on the back of the new-gen hardware, which itself is up 76% year-on-year at $192.8 million.

Not all good news though; software sales were down 10% year-on-year to $227.9 million. Right now, Sony’s ruling the roost with its PlayStation 4, but we knew that. the really interesting NPD number will come in after the release of the $399 Kinect-free Xbox One.

We’ll get to see then just how well Microsoft’s gamble has paid off.
