Warner interactive announced yesterday at its (very) pre-E3 event that it’ll be bringing a new Batman game to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 soon. If you’re thinking “there’s no way another Batman game could live up to Arkham Asylum (and presumably, its soon to be released sequel Arkham City),” you’re probably right and Monolith, developers of this new game realise this too, which is why they’re doing something different.

So different, in fact, that I wonder if the developers wouldn’t mind sharing their drugs…

Called “Gotham City Imposters,” the downloadable first-person shooter is a 4v4 multiplayer affair set in the Batman universe where players create their own customisable Bats or Jokerz (their “z”, not mine) characters, imposters, and battle it out “using unprecedented customization options including insane costumes, homebrewed gadgets and a wide range of traditional and imagined weapons.” It’s a class-based online multiplayer only, so it’ll probably draw comparisons to games like Team Fortress and Monday Night Combat, but that also means it’ll lack any sort of narrative.

According to Kotaku’s hands-on though, there is a backstory, where “Gotham is filled with a lot of disgruntled citizens who have decided to put on a Batman cowl of their own and take out a rising crowd of Jester-themed baddies.”

Well that’s certainly an…interesting use of the DC licence. I have a fair amount of faith in Monolith though, so it’ll be cool to see what they’re able to do. Kinda dashes my hopes for a new No One Lives Forever though.
