These are the men who hacked the PSN in 2011

2 min read

Remember the April of 2011 when Sony’s PlayStation Network was hacked and down for three weeks? It seems like it was ages ago, and even though we know LulzSec was behind it, no one has been punished for our suffering. Four men have now pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court in London, to charges relating to the attacks on the CIA, UK crime agencies and taken responsibility for the hacking of over 70 million Sony accounts.

Jake Davis (20), Mustafa Al-Bassam (18), Ryan Ackroyd (26) and Ryan Cleary (21) is due to be sentenced next month. Davis, aka Topiary) ran LulzSec’s Twitter account as posed as their spokesman. Cleary has also pleaded guilty to separate charges including the hacking of US Air Force computers at the Pentagon. I guess I’m kind of disappointed that these guys are just being punished; I mean they should be hired by the government or Sony to help improve security on systems to prevent hacking like in the movies, right?

LulzSec caused a great amount of mildly entertaining (okay maybe a bit more than “mildly entertaining”) havoc when they decided to go on a hacking spree in 2011. Hacking websites like Minecraft and EVE Online, and being ballsy enough to even hack the CIA. The worst of their deeds was no doubt the attack on the PSN, costing Sony just about $171.1 million.

Enjoy all those Lulz in jail!

Thats not exactly how it works, they will get convicted and some time in their sentence they will be approached to work for the government or SONY this way they wont have a choice and cant make any demands

    • Lardus

Skilled people only get hired in the movies. In real life thy get the proverbial banhammer, or possibly silently “hired” in the way AndriyP suggests.

The kids these days must stop watching movies they get all these ideas that they can get away with anything or get a good job by doing bad things

The government doesnt know who you are
They dont know where you are from
But they will eventually find you
And they will own your life

Something tells me given the age of the kids, and since they’ve all pleaded guilty, they won’t serve time. Even Sony admitted that nothing was stolen, and no money was actually pilfered from credit cards. Sadly, beyond the bravado of the lulzsec kids, they were pretty third-rate.

Most likely they’ll get suspended sentences with fines, and probably a lifetime web ban.

  • Mustafa Al-Bassam…Dr.Evils henchman. It all makes sense.

  • Deon Steyn

Mustafa will be sent to Guantanamo, I hope he enjoys his cock meat sandwich.

    Dont drop the virtual soap.

Somehow I thought they would be a bit younger. Uber skillz though, I barely know where to switch on my laptop. Wish they’ve rather used it for something more uplifting, like developing a Mega Man game.

“Fixing” these always on DRM games gets my vote LoL

The funny thing is, lulzsec actually did Sony a favour. It pushed them to re-do PSN, and now it’s THE PREMIER online service for console gamers. Some may still think Xbox live has that crown, but strictly speaking, they’ve lost it long ago – in their pursuit to be a top box vendor.

Los de lyties…They just gave everyone a wakeup call..
