UCON kicks off on March 29

This isn't even Cape Town's final form...

Cape Town, you get a bum deal when it comes to conventions. rAge is exclusive to Johannesburg and the less said about last year’s Comic Con fiasco, the better. What you do get however, is UCON. And it all kicks off in March.

March 29-30 to be exact. Die Kaap gaming and anime convention is hitting the University of Cape Town Sport’s Centre soon, and is promising plenty of shopping for all your pop culture needs. There’ll be comics, anime, scantily-clad figures and of course plenty of cosplay on offer, plus a few starving artists who’ll be more than willing to accept your commissions for some custom art in the artist alley.

Tickets cost R50 a day, or R75 for a pass that includes access to console gaming, with that extra R25 going to charity. For the cosplay this year the grand prize is a trip up to rAge, while photographers will be on hand to take pictures and get them printed out for you.

Organised Chaos is handling the LAN this year, with a specially-quarantined section for anyone taking part in the all-night gaming session. There’s plenty more happening, so don’t forget to check out the UCON Facebook page for more details.

  1. Going to be a crazy insane weekend! UCON TAKES CAPE TOWN BY STORM. I will be participating there in many ways such as having a stall, hosting a ‘How to Cosplay’ panel/presentation, MCing the cosplay competition as Jigglypuff and also performing in that costume (bring your earmuffs), cosplaying a maid at the maid cafe and enjoying the event which offers so much to us!!!

I would imagine the rand being so poor would mean importing would be more expensive.

I’m really amped to be a part of this year’s Ucon – will be selling alternative printed shirts and clothes, along with a whole bunch of other amazing stalls, games and craziness. Check it out.
