UK game sales set new records

Finally some real sales information from the other side of the pond.

78 million games were sold in the UK this year, revenue for the 3rd quarter alone came to 332 million pound and the part I found very suprising was

The console market now accounts for 79 per cent of software revenues and 75 per cent of total software units.

It just doesn’t pay to release PC games anymore…

So it looks like the gaming industry is in good shape world wide which bodes well for the rest of us gamers… 2008 should be a great year.

Seeing statistics like this begs the question – why are we paying double for console games than we are for PC games ? Basic economics teaches us about economies of scale – the more you sell the lower the price. Get the KY boys I think we are getting screwed !

I read an article a long time ago about it and basically the main factor is that we can sell or trade games when we are finished. That market is virtually non existent in the PC gaming world…

Actually you’re both wrong, your question is upside down. You’re actually just lucky that in South Africa PC games are 1/2 the price of Console games, in the US and UK a new PC title is ~$50 and console games are ~$60. Even in Australia there is greater price parity.

The answer is piracy and economics. We actually have EA to thank for being the first to adjust their prices to the local market.

on the subject that percentage is not that staggering. Consider “platforms” for consoles: Wii, PS2, 360 + PS3, is 4 and PC is 5 so PC’s garner 1/5 of the market, which is exactly right.

So we are paying an internationally competitive price for our PC games and a 50% premium on console games. I dunno about you doobi but I’m still feeling like Marcellus Wallace in Zed’s basement.
