Just a quick update, the NXE is officially up and runnning. I turned on the console at around 12:10 and it was downloaded and installed by around 12:20 (on a 4mb line) so the whole process was fairly quicker than I initially thought it was going to be, although I can see download times increasing when a lot of people get home.
Creating the Avatar was pretty simple and the length you take all depends on how fussy you are going to be with your settings. I have just installed Gears of War 2 to my HDD and it looks like the install took around about 10 minutes or so.
So there you have it, it’s up and you can get it as soon as you get home. If you have any questions you can pop them into the comments and I will try and answer them for you.

I can confirm that on a US account the option is there and requires a 3mb download. After that you can run the program and make an account. There is the option for a free trial… busy with the sign up will update in a moment.

OK it seems like once you select the trial you have to activate it on the website. This part requires a US postal address that they are able to deliver too, so unless you have an aunt or uncle that live in the US, Im not sure how you are going to get around this one exactly.

FYI:
Games not to install to HDD, post NXE
Halo 3
GOW 2
Installing Games to the Hard Drive: Most of the time installing games to the hard drive makes for a smoother experience but major games Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 not only don’t benefit from them but it makes load times longer, and creates some in game issues along the way

I would like to know why or how that happens, it doesn’t make sense to me, as a HDD can read and be read much much faster than a rom drive?!?!

With a fake one, i doubt very much the M$ police are going to knock on the door and check that you live there.
google works well, you could probably even use the White House’s address…

Although it certainly beats the dog coming past and knocking your box over while the disc is spinning profusely.

Neither Netflix nor hard-drive installations are not really feasible with hard-drives smaller than the 60gb version.

just tested gears 2, the loading times felt similar if not actually a little quicker and i think there was less pop in. The nice thing is that the Xbox was completely quiet the whole time.

@Nick
What size is the Gears 2 installation?
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 14:12
Gears of War 2 was 6,8GB so the installs on a 20GB (that only has around 13 – 15GB free at best) is only really going to be good for one game install and the rest of your downloaded content. So if you play one game a lot, you can install it to make things a quieter and a little quicker.

Hwo long will the install take on a 384kbps line? 😥
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 14:34
I noticed in Gears of War 2 that there were black bands running across the top and bottom of the screen though, but at least its better than the way it would stretch it before.

Theoretically, if a 384kb/s line is connected properly, and traffic is not too bad you should be able to download at a rate 0f +/- 35kb/s, 128mb divided by 35kb/s should take roughly and hour, or are my calculations out… somebody, somebody, anybody??

As long as a piece of string.
jk – I’m on 384 too. A friend of mine did his in 30 mins with a 512…. so maybe an hour? It will also depend on how busy the servers are.

Anyone know if you can download this update as a file to a pc and install via dvd or memory stick onto your Xbox?
Not connected to xbox live but have internet at work
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 14:51
Maybe I got lucky with the time of day but even though I have a 4mb line i don’t usually get decent speeds through Live. It is possible that the files are also compressed.
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 14:54
Sorry, someone actually also asked earlier about what to do if he is not connected to Live. The NXE update will also be supplied on game discs in future, so you can install it from there.

Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 is actually slower on the HDD as on disc as quoted by other websites
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 15:05
Strange? Maybe when put side by side cause I didnt really notice any major difference. It comes down to the quieter drive. Considering I put probably well over 1000 hours into Gears 1 MP, I think that it will be worth my while to keep it installed. As for other games, I dunno really.

November 19, 2008 at 15:07
@ Nick, what SP line is that, cos i use HSDPA which is supposed to connect at 7.2Mb/s, and i have achieved d/l speeds of 220kb/s which in turn would download in just under 10 minutes???

November 19, 2008 at 15:11
Also not to forget, your drive’s laser plays a big big role in loading time, if your laser is just slightly out it can cause te world of difference
Nick
November 19, 2008 at 15:15
My Adsl 4mb is capable of 440kb/s or so at best. But I rarely get those speeds over live or with international downloads. Like I said, maybe I got lucky with the time of day and got around the 220kb mark that you mentioned because sometimes I only get 40 – 50kb over live and sometimes worse.

I installed fallout 3 on my HD and can’t say I notice much dif in starting up the game but there is a small but noticeable difference in ingame loading times. I am however far more aware of how noisy the fan on my xbox is – so much for being quieter.

Let’s see the Avatars, xbox.com have a nice little link, avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/(gamertag)/avatar-body.png just replace the (gamertag) with your gamertag. 😀
