Activision is set to host its second annual Call of Duty World Championships, where the winning team from 32 of the best in the world stand a chance of winning a share of a rather ludicrous $1 million prize. Because it’s once again sponsored and co-hosted by Xbox, it’ll be played on Microsoft consoles; the Xbox one this year.

If, however, you favour the PlayStation or PC, you need not even worry about entering. Hardly surprising, given that Microsoft is ponying up much of the prize.

“Qualifying for the Call of Duty Championship, presented by Xbox will be handled through online tournaments played on the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and broadcasted on MLG.tv….”

If you’ll recall, last year, Team XTaZ managed to get in to the championships at the eleventh hour, but were solidly thumped by the international competition.

According to the chaps at Mweb Gamezone, we’ll be sending another team this year to test their mettle against the best Xbox Call of Duty players. Nicholas Holden, from High Five (who, anecdotally has destroyed me in every single game we’ve played against each other, ever) is rather exceptional at the game, and he says this year South Africa will be ready.

“South African Call of Duty players have been silently preparing for a year after its initial fall out from the Call of Duty Championship. Now the players are more hungry than ever to prove themselves to an international scene", he says.

If you think you have what it takes to heed the Call of Duty, you can register for the South African Qualifiers right here. Matches will be played over Xbox Live on Xbox 360. Registration closes on February 22, which is the same day matches actually start. Either way, time to get practicing; the actual World Championship takes place between March 28-30 in Los Angeles.

Why should you care? Because Call of Duty is more than a game, apparently.

“Call of Duty is more than a video game. It’s a pastime shared by millions. It’s exciting to play and fun to watch, and we can’t wait to see what this year’s event has in store,” Activision CEO Eric Hirschberg said of the whole affair.

This is what makes the xbox brand more interesting than the competition, even though they offer so much for free, leading only to,their own bankruptcy. Lol. Xbox live is awesone!
