When I first saw Popcap’s 3rd person shooter spin-off of the beloved tower defense Plants vs Zombies, my initial reaction was of dismay and disbelief. that pretty much went away once I actually saw the game in action though, because it’s incredibly charming.

It’s sort of like Team Fortress 2 in the PvZ universe, featuring co-operative and competitive multiplayer. It’s coming to PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One with absolutely no other platforms announced as yet. Here’s a developer diary showing the game’s 24 player online multiplayer on the Xbox 360; yes, the Xbox 360 is capable of a game with a high multiplayer count. What’s your excuse, Titanfall?

The thing’s been given a voice-over by PopCap Executive Producer Brian Lindley, who goes through each of the units explaining how it all works.

According to PopCap, Garden Warfare will be “The ultimate battle for brainz! Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare digs into the trenches with an explosive new Co-op and Multiplayer action experience. Blast zombies and plants across a mine-blowing world that delivers the depth of a traditional online shooter blended with the refreshing humor of Plant vs. Zombies”

What do you think; is this something you’d even be marginally interested in playing? I’m certainly keen. It looks more interesting than most other shooters destined for release this year.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
