Who’s afraid of the big bad GTA V?

Grand Theft Auto V is releasing worldwide on the 17th of September 2013 and with it being one of the biggest games in the gaming industry it comes as no surprise that absolutely no one is releasing on the same day. The only big games releasing anywhere near it seems to be the annualised sports titles.

Here is a list of titles that I can find releasing in September as well; I’m using the American release date but the titles stay the same pretty much worldwide with a small variance on dates.

3rd September Release Date

This one surprised me as Rayman is quite a well known title and it is surprising that it feels it can release in September; however to be fair Ubisoft are releasing it 14 days before so it’s a fair enough gap. Two other titles releasing on the 3rd are Total Rome II (PC) and Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate (PS3)

[update] How did I forget Diablo 3 on PS3 and Xbox 360 also releasing on this date

10th September Release Date

The next week sees the release of Young Justice: Legacy (Xbox 360, PC and PS3) along with NHL 14, Puppeteer (PS3) and Kingdom Hearts HD: Remix (PS3) Sports titles I understand but the other three are playing with fire here.

17th September Release Date

And D-Day itself, obviously GTA V releases on this date and nothing else… oh wait there is one. Yes ladies and gentlemen we have the insanely overly-confident MechWarrior Online going toe-to-toe with the juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto.

What’s even more surprising is that MechWarrior has been in open beta for nearly a year already so why they decided to lose their first big marketing battle is beyond me.

24 September Release Date

And the following week sees the release of FIFA 14 which I don’t think will be overly affected by the GTA V release as it really is a totally different market. Granted their first week sales may be lower but by Christmas I don’t expect you will notice any difference over last years sales.

So that’s that, do you think MechWarrior’s marketers have lost their minds or do you think the fact that it already has over a million people playing the beta means that it is immune to the GTA effect?

Does it really matter that much for game releases?

I know for movies the first 2 weeks of ticket sales are very important o the competition does matter but I do not see if it matter for a game if you but in the first week of release of the 2nd month.

But cool synopsis of what is in store for us over the next month.

ooooooooh snap. I liked that guy. A bit of a twit but he felt that there was nothing else to say but for the ramblings of a mongoose having a stroke. He was probably a illiterate surrender monkey.

I really wanted RDR on pc too, I hope GTA V makes it. I have RDR on the 360, it could’ve been so much more ‘shiner’ on PC.

I swear maybe I should join the dark side and get saints row 3…. But my loyality is with GTA saints row 2 I traded in for being not good enough, car physics were beyond crap. and I wasnt impressed. So Maybe I should be silly and atleast get saints row 3 to try. But gta5 first 🙂

it’s a good move…There’s always space for those that ride against the tide.. 🙂
I reckon there’s too many alternatives these days to be too concerned about GTA…Lets see if there is more to the game than just these silly novelty features like sporting activities and so on…

At short term as gaming devs nobody wants to launch near the GTA V release but a long term Nintendo and their Wii U as a company is almost pissing in their pants, taking as a fact that is going to be a huge success,or it seems so.

You stupid fuck. They would have made that release date a long time ago, you think game companies look at all other games coming out and delay their game? No it doesn’t work like that, only the uninformed noob views it as competition.

Wow…does your mother know you’re using the computer? Don’t flip the bitch switch. It’s actually quite common for games companies to stagger releases, and to push them back or forward to give them separation from huge releases.

Developers have done this for GTA, and CoD, to name just two of the biggest releases.

Mechwarrior Online is a Free to Play title which has been open to the public for about 10 months now. Unlike box titles like GTA V, Mechwarrior Online’s fortunes will not be reliant on the day it comes out. Instead, it seems like their strategy is to slowly build up a base over time.

I almost suspect that they chose September 17th specifically because they didn’t want everyone rushing in on day 1. The game still has some key features that are coming in the coming months so they may be trying to avoid the limelight for now.
