Will Evolve get modding?

Evolve kraken

Evolve is one of my most anticipated games coming out next year. It features insane multiplayer action and all kinds of unique elements. However, no matter how cool a game is, people always want to modify it and make it even more awesome. But will that be possible with Evolve?

One of Turtle Rock’s most successful titles was Left 4 Dead. It featured all kinds of cool multiplayer stuff, and was modded like crazy. In fact, I know at least one of you likes to use the Mass Effect mod for L4D2 to make the team look like a bunch of Krogans and Asari. However, Evolve might not be that easy to mod.

In a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit (thanks Gamespot), Turtle Rock answered the question about modding, but it might not be what the studio or players were hoping for:

Co-founder Phill Robb: I’m personally hopeful we’ll be able to open things up for modding, but because we don’t own the engine Evolve uses, there are significant roadblocks we have to clear to make it a reality. No promises, but if we CAN, we will.

Excellent, so the intent is there and they are definitely keen on offering this. I’d love to see how people can mod the various characters, weapons, monsters and even environments. However, it’s interesting to see that the roadblocks are based on the engine and not on issues with developers or the platforms.

Would you want to mod Evolve? What sort of changes do you think would be improved with community involvement and development? Before I’d be willing to mod it, I certainly want to get to experience the various hunters and monsters. They all seem so unique and well defined, it will be hard to make a mod as interesting.

I think, to be fair, give the game a run completely BEFORE modding. It might be that modding it, would be like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

Hmm, I don’t think modding will work well with Evolve. The game looks near perfect to me as is, I just hope they continue to bring out new monsters/maps/game modes. Else I worry it may die out eventually.

Modding would be interesting, but I’m mostly just glad they said in the AMA that dedicated servers will be able. That to me is most important thing that they could have confirmed, as it will significantly lengthen the life of this game. Really really can’t wait to start.

Also had a look at a full evacuation game, seems to be a good mix of modes that deliver a diverse experience. Especially with the buffs that the round winner gets in the next match. They just need to officially announce the new monster “Wraith”.
