Dying Light’s mod-breaking was done in error

Yesterday, we told you that Techland’s latest patch for the PC version of the fun but flawed zombie-hacking, wall-running open world survival game killed the prospect of mods. We foolishly failed to reach out to Techland for comment – because had we, we’d have found that the patch had killed mods in error. What was a bit of code intended to put the brakes on multiplayer cheating, unfortunately had the unintended side effect of stopping any code that changed the game from running. The company has confirmed the faux pas, and reaffirmed its commitment to keeping modders happy.

“Creating obstacles for modders has never been our intention,” Techland said to Ars Technica.  “We are now working on a quick patch that will re-enable common tweaks while stopping cheating in the game’s multiplayer mode. “At Techland, we have always supported the mod community and loved seeing how our own game can be changed by the players. A big part of the original Dead Island‘s success was the passion and creativity of mod-makers from our community. We want the same for Dying Light.”

As for the DMCA takedowns that were filed against YouTubers who had posted videos of their mods, that too was apparently erroneous. The Entertainment Software Association has since apologised for the mistake.

“ESA was notified this morning that potentially erroneous DMCA notices had been transmitted by one of its vendors,” the ESA said.  “Upon further review, it was determined that the notices should not have been sent and retractions were issued immediately. We regret any inconvenience and have taken steps to avoid similar situations in the future.”

Techland have confirmed that they’ll do their best to knock out a quick patch to re-enable players to mod the offline, single-player game to their zombie-killing hearts’ content.

Question, while being mostly a parkour and melee game, how do the projectile weapons factor in? Crossbows? Pistols? Sniper rifles? Cannons? Railguns?

Now I’m also curious about that.

Apparently there are guns, etc. But, although powerful, they’re rare. Lotta reviews I’ve read recommend keeping them for encounters with hostile human groups, who usually have guns too.

I think they’re there as a type of ’emergency only’ contingency – “Too many zombies? Bring out the guns!”

Aye, I can imagine coming up with a badass chasing you at night, and then lo and behold, double barrel shotgun to the face, and the badass is no more

We give developers a lot of stick on the net, but this should be commended!! They made a mistake, they apologized and are working on fixing it!! Can’t ask for more than that!!
They could have just stuck their heads in the sand and make a patch that needs to be beta tested…. Too soon?

You loved the fact that all the intricate choices you had to make actually had zero consequence at the ending?

Yes. Think of it. Think how futile any and all of our actions are to the Universe. It’s the perfect ending.

Lol sure that’s awesome for you, but i would have liked a better ending, after all, i did spend a few years of my life and money on it, if it was a FPS type of game i would have 100% be fine with it, but being a RPG and “your choices affects the universe” type of game that ending was lazy, but that’s just my opinion, no need to spread it around..:-P

So we got pewdiepie then no mods and take down notices. To me it seems what’s happening is out of the developer’s hands. Almost like they not in control. Who is in control? Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. Look at how Warner Bros dealt with Shadow of Mordor, in exchange for early review access, restrictive contract for positive feedback and certain things had to be mentioned a lot.

Warner Bros, who talked CD Projekt RED into using DRM for The Witcher 2 at retail.

No mods caused a bad reaction from people. Now Warner Bros is making the developer fix it.
And take down notices, that’s Warner Bros written all over it.

    Don’t Support DRM
