Batman-Arkham-Knight

2015 is going to be my year. I know I’m supposed to be impartial and unbiased, but testicles to that idea right now. I want Arkham Knight. I want it so bad, that I hope people aren’t watching me when I lick Batman comics in CNA. The development gang at Rocksteady recently took to Reddit for an AMA session, answering numerous questions. And shedding plenty of new light on the game, the world and it’s story. And that sexy new Batsuit. Hmmmmmm.

Highlights from the AMA include new deets on Batman’s technological costume and armour upgrade:

We wanted to highlight the interaction between Batman and the Batmobile – you’ll see that the suit mirrors the design of the car in a lot of ways. The new suit impacts gameplay as well, as it enhances some of Batman’s abilities, particularly in the way the Batman and the car work together.

That’s not the only costume in the game however. As usual, Batman will have plenty of other suits:

We’ve already announced some new skins, like the Batman New 52 skin, which is available as part of the Limited Edition and the Batmobile editions of the game.

DLC in Arkham Asylum, City and Origins has been predominantly Challenge Map content. Expect the DLC in Arkham Knight to have an actual story:

Both the Harley Quinn and Red Hood DLC that we’ve already announced are story missions! You get Harley’s story by pre-ordering; Red Hood is a retailer exclusive depending on where you live (Gamestop in the USA, other regions still TBD).

The combat has also been overhauled to be more cinematic, more badass:

Zafer Coban and the rest of the animation team have been doing some amazing work on making combat look and feel awesome. For example, there’s a scene toward the end of the Ace Chemicals Infiltration Part 1 Trailer where Batman faces off against two combat experts. Everything in that shot is taken straight from the game – we just shifted the camera to get a slightly more cinematic angle.

On the new martial artist enemies, who can counter your own moves back at you:

They’re fast, and they can dodge and counter you – in the most recent builds they’ll dodge you without making you drop your combo, so it’s easy to get caught out the first few times.

Are there any limits to the combo variations that Batman can pull off? He just may be limitless according to Rocksteady:

Difficult to say – I’d have to ask the QA guys what they’ve managed to hit, but we tend to find the community will go to town on any records we set ourselves anyway! We’ve got some big fights at certain points in the game, where you’ll be facing a significant number of enemies, so there’s a lot to work with there.

While the Batmobile forms a crucial gameplay pillar, it won’t be used for unnecessary purposes in the game:

When we added the Batmobile to the game, we wanted to make sure it’s a fun, meaningful addition to every part of the game. Batman wouldn’t use it if he didn’t need it. So there will be points in the main story where you will need to use the Batmobile to progress, and if you’re anything like me, there will be points where you can’t use the Batmobile and wish it was there!

On the death of the Joker in Arkham City limiting the story in any way possible:

I think it’s quite the opposite! Sefton has said that when they started work on Batman: Arkham City, they had the vision of the final scene Joker’s death almost from the start, and looked at the story from the perspective of the events that would lead to that point.

With Batman: Arkham Knight, that ending is the point that we jump off from, asking “what happens when Joker is removed from Gotham” and looking at the fallout from those events.

While the game has the Arkham Knight causing massive trouble for Batman, don’t forget that the Scarecrow is the puppet master here:

Scarecrow’s probably my favourite Batman villain! He’s not limited to DLC at all – he’s the games’ main villain, and the instigator of the events that kick off the narrative.

Arkham City may have been big, but Gotham City is going to blow your mind in terms of scale and detail according to Rocksteady:

Now that we’ve got all of Gotham to explore it’s a great experience. The City design team here has done an amazing job building an environment that’s huge and intricately detailed. The detail in Arkham games was always my favourite thing about playing them before I joined Rocksteady, and it’s awesome that the guys have managed to keep that level of care on something so much bigger.

Fighting, exploring and driving form the backbone of Arkham Knight. But so does the predator mode, which will require more dangerous thinking in order for you to be successful at it:

I think my favourite tweak to predator has to be size of some of the encounters. You’re going to be taking on large, varied groups of armed guards. You’ll need to be a serious predator expert if you want to complete those sections without alerts.

Don’t forget, that there’s a new trailer later tonight for the game. We’ll have a post ready for that, as soon as it goes live.

Probably a timed exclusive, by the time you’ve finished the game it should be available. Or wait for the steam special that will have everything as is the norm.

This game can’t come quick enough. It will probably be my only purchase for 2015 and will be worth every cent for that fully transformable Batmobile.

Well, I will most likely be getting the Batmobile edition. With that said, my budget will pretty much be shot and due to recent circumstances, the last game I purchased was LEGO Marvel Superheroes mid last year some time. Witcher 3, Dark Souls 2, Thief 4, Borderlands Pre-Sequel are all on my to get list, but just can’t right now 🙁

The story DLC better be worth more than two hours game time. It felt like such a cheap add on in Arkham City.

I still don’t know how I feel about the whole city being without any civs. It just feels like an easy way for them.
When I play as Batman I want to FEEL like Batman. Save people and all that stuff. A city full of thugs is just too similar to Arkham City, or am I being nitpicky here?

The probably did it to cut down on accidental vehicle homicides you might commit while driving

I don’t know, just feels like an easy way out. They could’ve made the civs like in Driver San Francisco if that was such an issue. Man those civs were impossible to hit. 😉

THIS so much!! I feel exactly the same. I want a living, breathing city, at least for an hour or so. Then everything can go awry. I don’t like thugs, all looking alike, randomly standing around the city waiting to be slapped silly by Batman.

I’ll still enjoy the game, but I was also hoping for some real progress here. I actually really don’t care for the bat mobile.

Agreed. It’s nearly 2015, making a city that feels like a city shouldn’t be an issue anymore.
Like you say, maybe make half the game or even a third only with a real city, then things can go down.
Just imagine a Batman game where it’s not about a place taken over by the bad-guys and you could do the real Batman stuff. Fight petty criminals, rescue civs, maybe interrogate a few criminals and then work your way up to discovering the hide-out of a boss.

            Sounds about right.
Have you noticed that the orcs in Shadow of Mordor move and react exactly like the thugs in Batman? Funneh.

Indeed, but the orcs are just way more fun

I liked Arkham Asylum. Big fan of Arkham City. Arkham Knight I don’t like the bat suit. I don’t like the Batmobile. I’m worried about the story and the type of message they going to portray. No Mark Hamil.

I’m not hyped for Arkham Knight. Yes the combat will be good. That might be about it. DLC. DLC as pre-order incentives. DRM. Fuck that.

Not a day 1 purchase for me. I’ll wait for the GOTY edition.

But what about Hush? He’s too big to have him as some lame-ass side-mission.

I was once in CNA and I saw this dude who had his shirt up and was rubbing two issues of Batman (issues from Secret City) on his nipples, mumbling something about the “White knight rises”. Looks like I’ve already met Darryn, then… Hm.

I suppose it will be like all the other Batman games, where you start as Batnoob and have to learn and unlock all your abilities, an still get nerfed in boss battles too.

I love the series and I am rather excited about Arkham Knight however at the same time I just can’t help getting that feeling that even with this delay until June next year that the PC version will also (so inevitable that I’d bet my licked comic I bought from CNA on it, who does that?) get delayed for around a month or so following the release of the console versions (and it’ll of course be for the only reason they ever use these days “to better optimise it” because 6+ extra months is never enough to think about it beforehand).

Anyway as long as they don’t have that stupid Origins QTE boss combat crap in it I guess I’ll still be happy (even if I play it two months after everyone else).
