Star Citizen’s shooter mode made me sick

I’ve never experienced the stomach turning displeasure of first-person shooter motion sickness. Zoe always describes her handicap to me, and it sounds absolutely horrid. Having to lie down just to keep your stomach from spinning wildly out of control after a few minutes of gametime is something I never want to have to go through, but Star Citizen’s first-person shooter mode got me pretty close.

I think it’s the unrelenting combination of a crosshair that’s projected onto the environment, the obscene movement of the camera during sprinting and the constant popping of your helmet’s HUD. That’s enough to make me feel ill while everything is still on the ground, so imagine what it’s like when the gravity switch gets flicked into the off position.

That’s when I literally had to stop watching the gameplay below, which was a new feeling for me. I’ve never had the sensation of feeling this wrong while watching a shooter, and it probably means I’ll be violently ill if I ever do get my hands on it. So Star Citizen will remain a space-sim, and only a space-sim, for me it seems.

What I did watch though looked fairly standard. In amongst the scripted tactical talk, I saw very little differentiating Star Citizen’s additional mode from any other traditional shooter I’ve seen. Of course it’s not the game’s focus, but it still would’ve been nice to see something other than brightly lit bullets flashing down really dark corridors for ten minutes.

Regardless, that’s what’s being worked on now as the launch date for one of the most funded indie games of all time remains a mystery. Maybe if the game stopped making millions each week there would actually be a drive to finish it up and start making money off the completed project?

  1. Star Citizen ?? It worries me that they are spending resources on developing a fps portion for the game. Is this going to be optional to progress in the game? I like the idea of walking around on a ship sure, but not like this. I’d rather JUST explore a ship, talking and obtaining quests from engineers in the engine room, shady characters in the rec room, etc.

Like her? Nah man, the ‘hair’ freaks me out 😛 I mean, like we have cotton swabs for our ears, they must have for those, uhm, depressions. Imagine waking up the morning after and seeing her in the bathroom busy digging into her own head with your cotton swabs (and then they’re all green and gooey when they come out – yech)

Nope, FPS is part of the SP campaign too. It’s FP when landing on planets, although generally no FPS allowed there, forms part of ship boarding/defense, capturing space stations, exploring, whatever else they think of. For the most part though in the MMO part, if you don’t want to deal with stuff like that you don’t have to, just avoid situations where it’s possible.

Hmmm I dunno, I don’t know why they did this, you can have a complete space flight sim experience without adding on-foot combat. I’m not a marine, I’m a spaceship pilot/smuggler/pirate. At best I should be passable with a weapon. I like how Wing Commander IV approached it: there were tough and gritty marines on the Intrepid, and from time to time you had to escort and protect them on missions, like boarding a ship or breaking someone out of a prison colony.

They did this because it’s a natural extention to a living universe where the space sim is the main element. There will be other elements too, later on. Most of them after release of version 1, like SIM (where you can run your own factory or space station), but we know of at least one other: STRATEGY (commanding a fleet from larger ships). These game elements will be fleshed out more after the first release.

Star Citizen is going to be the all-encompassing game that caters all playing styles. Basically, whatever you like to play you will find it in Star Citizen (eventually).

Seems more like a natural extension to a hopelessly mismanaged game that will come to define the phrase “feature creep” for the next 20 years.

            November 6, 2014 at 13:58

It may seem so to a person who don’t understand how this game is developed. If you look deeper into the project you’ll see that very little is new. Most of the stretch goals and added content is actually a result of Chris Roberts’ thoughts all the way back to 1997. Only now has he had the opportunity to make it real.

Besides, “feature creep” is a term used to talk down projects which are delayed in release due to constantly added content. Star Citizen is not in this category because you can play it now, and you will continue to be able to play more and more of it until it’s completed and released.

Ehhh, I’m actually an Original Backer who has given them enough money to be considered a “Rear Admiral”. They’ve promised a lot and so far only delivered a pre-alpha demo. None of us really know how the Persistent Universe is going to work. Just because they have plans for something doesn’t mean it’s actually going to work how they hope it will. Designing and selling ships is easy. Actually making stuff is hard. It could turn out great but it could also turn into a huge boondoggle. Hopefully for the sake of the koolaid drinkers it turns out ok.

Then you do that. No one forces you to go on FPS missions if you rather want to do other things. The FPS element in Star Citizen is for those who want this as an added element to the gameplay. So yes, it’s an optional thing in the game. However, you and your ship may be attacked by FPS guys and then you probably should defend yourself if you don’t want to flee or surrender.

Suqadren 42 first chapter is out at the end of next year, its the single player campaigh and the first chapter is 20hours long. Think Wing Commander, then in 2016 the persistent universe.

The multi crew ship module is what im looking forward to and thats penned for mid 2015. The fps module that you saw now is going to be released at the start of next year.

Everything is very early alpha, all the modules that they test now fps/racing/dogfighting/social module etc is so that they can test and apply the changes to the persistent universe and the single player game.

Simply put they are doing it properly.

The best thing for motion sickness in FPS games is a higher FOV (field of view). Many console titles are set to 75-80 and this is what causes it. Try upping to 90 and above (if it allows) for less vomit factor.
