Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz the Great and Powerful are 2 family fantasies currently screening in local cinemas. Like many animated films, both of these live-action releases don’t skimp on the goofy moments for children…

So today we want to know how you feel about “kids’ stuff” in the movies – you know, all the slapstick humour, laughs based on bodily functions and fluids, and general manic pacing? Does it immediately put you off a film; can you handle it in moderation, or – like most South Africans evidently – do you enjoy it? Let us know.

If you go into the cinema with the mindset that what you are watching is indeed aimed at children, then you should be alright with all of those shenanigans. Don’t think I’ve ever been bothered about the amount goofy moments if I know it’s that type of film beforehand. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed the content in the kids films aimed at the older audiences that kids will not pick up on. Films like “The Lion King” or “Up” are very different to watch as a kid and as an adult.

If it’s the straight-up kids stuff, like the Madagascar or Ice Age movies, I can generally give it a skip. But when a film blends it in, I don’t mind. It’s often even funnier. Now what is worse are teen/college movies that just go straight for unimaginative yuks.
