There is a character design doing the rounds from the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5 which has got a lot of tongues wagging with the industry veterans.
Apparently this darling young lady is called Quiet and is coming to your screens in MGS5, why she is wearing this outfit is anyone’s guess but according to the developer he wanted to add some more sexiness to the characters in Metal Gear Solid 5.
Now I’m all for sexy but even I think this is going a little bit over the top for a game such as MGS
Now maybe there is a logical reason for her to have split tights, virtually no top and a strippers g-string but for the life of me I can’t see what it is.
Check out some of the tweets the reveal has been getting.
Don’t care if this gets me in trouble. This character design is disgusting. Our industry should be better than this. http://t.co/4CCaF1qNEP

September 10, 2013 at 09:39
I can’t put a finger on it. It’s the same way I like CODMW but not CODBLOPS2. I like C&C Generals but not starcraft2. It just feels wrong somehow. I don’t know, it might be because it didn’t live up to the hype (for me).

Well, maybe this one will break that trend. Perhaps since this one will be different from past MGS games it will change your mind and gain a new perspective on the series as a whole. Just give it a shot and maybe MGS will from then on be on your radar. I started playing nearly 2 years ago and didn’t have experience with the series before then. I first played snake eater on 3DS and after that, I fell in love with the series ever since. So for MGS V, this will be the one that opens your eyes to what you’ve been missing your whole life and you never turn back. If it happened to me, it can happen to you. Just saying.

September 6, 2013 at 10:08
To a certain extent I agree with you. Meryl’s underwear scene, Fortune’s outfit, the entire Beauty and Beast squad, not to mention a fully naked Raiden, all that emphasis on Solid Snake’s ass and Eva’s really unzipped jump suit shows that MGS has never shy’d away from sex appeal. Unfortunately this is going totally overboard. All the designs before were sexy and classy. I honestly don’t think that this was a good idea. It’s too oversexualised for my taste. Not cool Kojima, not cool.

Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)
September 6, 2013 at 10:14
I’m all for the strategic deployment of undergarments. Although, let’s be fair, anyone who has ever watched Survivor will know that once you’re on that damn island for more than 20 days, your thong becomes pants, and the remains of your pants… a shemagh.
What I do find ridiculous is the white knighting… why are the biggest moaners ,,,guys? I mean take Sessler for instance, the guy got his panties in a bunch not so long ago on a non-issue. Those who know me, know that the Banana is all for gender equality and gamer parity (I’m one of the few who insist that female gamers should embrace the term “gamer” rather than the diminutive “girl gamer”), but I really dislike this trend of opportunistic white knighting, or manufacturing issues that relate to gender. All it does is detract from REAL issues of inequality and misogyny.
PS: If you really think about it, this statue actually has realistic proportions, unlike say a Barbie.

I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You`re not going to say, “I know this white guy named Mike Wallace.” Hear what I`m saying? ” The same can be applied to sexism etc.

These White Nights are disgusting, and shamefull to men cross the world.
Nobody will hang on your dicks because you “think” you are defending women, you are actualy damaging females, to the core.
A female’s natural emotional / phyche is to veel attractive to men, her hormonal balance is build on this.
Once you tell men they can’t appreciate the female form, in all styles and glory, you tell women to feel guilty for getting attention from men, messing her up to the core in the process.
A ton of “semi” lesbians are a great excample to this.

Sexy is the new sexist?
Brenz
September 6, 2013 at 12:01
Oh come on now.
There is entirely too much talk of sexism and portraying woman incorrectly in games.
Since as long ago as i can remember, woman have been designed as being slightly over the top with the sexual appearance aspect, woman are beautiful in general and thus it is easy to do and people expect it, men and women expect a designed woman to be beautiful and sexual.
Nobody wants to see a realistically portrayed woman with small breasts, a mole, a big ass, shaved head, or any other aspects which would make a beautiful woman less attractive.
Soft is the word I use, and I use it all the time, the world is becoming soft and sensitive regarding too many things, its all about being offended, or portrayed in a stereotypical way.
You know why people are offended by stereotypes, because they are TRUE!
Oh I find that offensive, I find that impeaches on my human rights to be treated like a glass sculpture, etc etc.
As an all time favourite of mine said many times, “harden the fuck up!”

http://www.policymic.com/articles/42359/topless-women-in-public-not-breaking-the-law-says-nypd
Kratos wears a skirt for 6 of his games and 3 in others; nobody bats an eyelash, but stockings is “overly sexist”? You can’t be “overly” sexist.
This character design isn’t. At all.

I couldn’t agree more! This is a non-issue. It’s almost like the nonsense that came during the wake of the Dead Island bikini torso drama. It was all unnecessary. Meanwhile, the real issue with gender in gaming was never addressed, and that’s rampant misogynistic opinions of female gamers as substandard gamers.

It’s the Americans who are still tied to their archetypal opinions of women, but while trying to whiteknight, are still enforcing the division even more. It’s a shame how hypocritical even gamers, of all people are. These game “journalists come out to say that female characters with big breasts create negative attitudes towards women, but will refute the notion that the violence which is prevalent in most games doesn’t desensitise the gamers who consume it.
Typical American double standard
Some people have been able to separate sexiness from sexism.

The sexist statement is implying that the developer (male) is being overly sexist in developing a character that is so blatantly sexy for no valid reason.
Trust me I like the character design in most games and I’m not one to be called a feminist or white knight but even I feel this is going a little over the top. No one is going to go into battle dressed like that while Kratos was dressed correctly for this supposed era..
Quiet could have been sexy while still being dressed semi reasonably

My Kratos analogue is not just about his mode of dressing, but the amount of flesh he exposes. Male characters are freer to expose the certain parts of their body while women who do the same in those games lead the media to label those games sexist. A la Dragon’s Crown. This is why I cited the case about the woman in California who was arrested for exposing the same part of a body as a man was; and the man wasn’t committing a misdemeanour whereas she was. Point being that we are still buying into patriarchal constructions of female modesty and mistranslating a liberation from that into sexualisation.
There is nothing “reasonable” about character design. It’s a purely creative endeavour from the perspective of the creator. Of course it’s funny that all Quiet wears is a bikini with stockings that’s because we don’t associate bikinis with soldiers or snipers; was it reasonable when Nevan had only half of her body covered in Dante’s Awakening? It wasn’t weird or sexist back then because it wasn’t as cool then to discuss sexism as it is now post-Sarkeesian.
I think “reasonable” is too subjective a word to attach to character design.

I also take issue with your assertion that it’s sexist BECAUSE he is male.
Having your skin out in the sun is unreasonable?
If we can accept violence in games, why can’t we accept sexiness? Why does no one take issue to the fact that men are more subjected to violence in video games than women. Heck, it’s even accepted (a la the guy who got his dick cut off and women applauding on national television). But sexy women in games is sexist?
If there are two diametric notions: violence and sex. It is obvious that men are the source-subject of one and women of the other. This is just a fact; certainly descriptive of our landscape, so why do we bicker amongst ourselves?
Another argument I hear is that sexy women in games (the ones they believe amount to sexism) serve to exclude female gamers. I’ve never heard greater fallacy in my life. Video game characters are almost always attractive; male or female. You don’t find major male characters with man boobs.or pot bellies.

All these ridiculous white knighting sods like David Ellis, Kevin Dent and Stephen Toulouse need to watch The Heat. There’s a scene where Melissa McCarthy’s character scurries around the Captain’s office, and shouts loudly, “where’s this man’s balls?” and then mocks him for having “extremely tiny balls”.
Overzealous white-knighting is itself a sexist gesture, especially when controversy is manufactured, but more importantly, I have to ask, where are your balls lads…?

It was awesome. I loved the chemistry Bullock and McCarthy had. They really complimented each other, and I can’t wait to get that movie on bluray.

Oh no, a game with traditionally sexualized characters, has more sexualized characters in a sequel….that none of us paid for, were part of the design phase for, research and dev for, acted in, voice acted in, etc…. It sure is a terrible thing that whenever a game is released, everyone is forced by law to purchase and play it.

Design looks different from what was in trailer; probably just me. Anyway, not exactly what I was expecting but if gives Quiet a way of expression since she’s without words so be it; I don’t mind the alft at all.

Artist here, 43 years on this planet so far,
Until a triple-A video game company has a clear majority of female employees and makes a video game based on a story written (by a women) from a female perspective, about female characters – This discussion is a moot point.
Effeminate guys getting in touch with their feminine side will never amount to anything other then what we see here.
And as for the Shakespearean truths of sex and violence… The entertainment industry in every form has strangled the modern Amygdala into complete passivity. Scaring us, and titillating us is impossible when we see it every-freaking-day with our coffee in the morning until we fall asleep watching some trailer for an over-sexed, overly-violent video game coming out next year or so… Wishing, dreaming for something different, something new to really wake us back up.
I dare the women of the gaming industry to come together and show us what they want. What they want to see, what they want to play. I guarantee you will see a truly original screw to this stagnating industry when this happens.
It’s only a matter of time now I think. And it really is about dahm time.
Inspiration breeds inspiration,

It’s how the industry chooses to portray women soldiers. Which would be okay if the guys were out there in thongs, ripped shorts and muscle shirts – at least it wouldn’t look stupid and be so overly offensive. It’s like the Korean made games were warriors wear high heels. Yeah right.
Brian Murphy
November 30, 2013 at 22:34
I’m not sure it’s ‘the industry’, since up until recently, female soldiers weren’t really being portrayed much. Heck, CoD or BF didn’t add female models until late last gen. The issue is this particular game, and I can only say…that’s how this series has been forever. Does it make it right? Is it fair? No.
But neither is the woefully unrealistic impression of how men are portrayed in games either, and I don’t see a huge outcry over that either.
Brian Murphy
November 30, 2013 at 22:34
It’s no different than the unrealistic male physique exhibited in most games. Men don’t typically wear thongs though…do they? Ripped Shorts and muscle shirts? Yeah…there are many games like that.

Here’s a silly thought, and mind you it’s pure silly. Take this same character, remove the fishnets, boots, guns and place her on a beach. Question: Would anyone be bitching? Answer: No. Maybe the ugly folks or the folks with a low self image but w/e you can’t fix crazy. I am I the only one sick of these wanna be activists trying to make a case of overly sexist bullshit? If you don’t like, don’t buy it.
