You’ll pay over R2000 for a car in Gran Turismo 6

GT6

Pretty much every racing game these days has microtransactions of some sort, and Gran Turismo is joining that racket with their own form of unlocking cars early on instead of earning them. But sweet Le Mans, those prices are ludicrously insane.

Gran Turismo 6 will have a virtual currency in the form of credits, which can be used to purchase vehicles, parts and some go-faster stripes for your car. You can still grind your way through the game to unlock all that content, which according to Eurogamer is very similar to the structure used in GT5, but you can also buy credits.

And the pricing is a bit steep on that. Credits can be bought in 500 000, 1 million, 2.5 million and 7 million denominations. According to the Playstation store, that virtual currency will cost you:

• 500,000 In-Game Credits (£3.99/€4.99)
• 1 Million In-Game Credits (£7.99/€9.99)
• 2,500,000 In-Game Credits (£15.99/€19.99)
• 7 Million In-Game Credits (£39.99/€49.99)

So that’s almost R700 already for 7 million in-game credits. And may the racing gods help us all if Zuma makes a speech. And in GT6, some of the top cars will cost plenty if you want them right away, such as Jaguar XJ13 which will run you up a bill of 20 million credits. That’s £119.95. Or in Randelas, R2051.

That’s more than the bloody game itself. Twofold. Bear in mind that the chance to cause yourself irreparable brain damage by actually spending this much money is still a choice for gamers who want to shortcut their way through the game.

But having such a crazy option in the game won’t do the concept of microtransactions any positive favours either, something that Forza 5 has learnt the hard way.

Agreed. I am purchasing GT6 tomorrow and have NO intention of short-cutting my way through (never have in a racing game – Forza and GT – and never will!). That’s part of the fun for me – earning the credits, through races, and eventually being able to buy that favourite car, fair and square!

If you just use your credit card to buy all the cars you want, that removes ALOT of the fun from the game… If not all of it!

Each iteration of GT has keep me occupied for 2 – 3 years at least. GT is a car collectors game for me, and there is nothing better than finally being able to buy one of your dream cars in game after working hard for it. It’s not for everybody (hence the micro transactions), but I’m totally in love with the game.

Totally agree! The one thing, just one thing, that I had against GT5 was the AI – still feels exactly like the AI in GT1 – they simply don’t acknowledge your presence on the track, which leads to a lot of side swiping when you’re on the racing line next to them and they want in. Hoping GT6 will sort that out. 🙂

But yeah, REALLY looking forward to the weekend and doing some credit earning and, hopefully, buying the first dream car on my list in GT6. 🙂 And WITHOUT the help of my credit card! 🙂

What about the horrid sound of the game? I love GT but the sound problem is unacceptable. Every other racing game has decent sound

They were still there in GT5. Not sure about GT6. There are endurance races, but they are a lot shorter. Also hoping for a 1000 lap race 😀

Sure they’ll still be there. Every year, since about 2005 or so, GT has hosted a Le-Mans 24 hour event during the actual Le-Mans 24 Hour. Usually teams of 2 or more drivers, like a real Le-Mans team, race a literal 24 hour race using GT5 at the same time as the real event.

Hectic, but does sound like fun (although I’d want it done outside of the real 24 Hour event – I LOVE Le Mans and always watch as much of the coverage as I can).

I hear, without actually checking the facts, that the problem with Forza is that without paying the grind is just too long, hope that is not the way with all these games: “oh you can grind but it will take 1 billion hours to get the next car, but you could buy it for the small some of $100, and it comes with racing strips.”

Etoll is bullshit, but right now it doesn’t affect me yet. Apperently the gautrain and bus usage went up by a considerable amount. Now, dont get me wrong, but that is a good thing. They might not have gone about this the correct way, but getting people to use public transport is a win.

Am massive GT fan as well, and getting GT6 tomorrow. But I think these microtransactions are a misstep by Polyphony/Sony. Games press are all over this due to Forza 5 and hence game is getting negative feedback before release even. Fully understand its optional but you know the press…sensational headlines and all (present company excluded of course!). And to be fair GT is asking for it in this case.

R2k for virtual car = madness! No matter how unimportant it may be to completing the game.

I read an article recently (Polygon?) in which someone pointed out that ANY game with microtransactions will inevitably have been tinkered with to make the microtransactions work in line with that progression.

I really hope GT hasn’t stuffed around with that otherwise they going to get as much flak for it as Forza – and deservedly so!
