We’ve actually already reviewed Diablo 3 way back in early 2012 before our nice new site redesign and before Garth abandoned us for print *spit* media. As such I’m not going to review the entire game again as the story and basic game is exactly the same; but things have changed in this console release.

I’ve been trying it out on the Xbox 360 and when I originally received the game I honestly was a little disappointed about it as I couldn’t see any reason to play the same game on a console when it was obviously designed for the PC… how wrong I was.

The first thing you notice when you jump into the game is how intuitive the controls feel; the face buttons are your standard attack options (that you need to unlock), the right trigger is your special attack and the left stick moves your character around.

PS3_Multiplayer_16592_048

Obviously without the accuracy of a mouse the game does help you out with the targeting a bit and while this may annoy the purist Diablo fans it really made the experience a ton more fun for myself. It feels a bit like a twin-stick shooter, using one stick, but at no stage do you feel like the game is playing for you.

But what about that other stick I hear you say? Well instead of changing the basic gameplay and allowing you to run and shoot they’ve decided to assign the right stick to a new evade movement. So when you are getting completely overloaded or you are about to be hit by a ranged shot you can simply flick the right stick to evade and then counter.

Xbox_Multiplayer_458

Another obvious question is how does it look and I can answer that easily, it looks fantastic. The colours are crisp and clear, the characters are well detailed and there is no frame rate drop that I ever noticed.

So right now you have the nicest control scheme bundled with a great look and experience. But what does it add to the game?

Well nothing, but it does enhance the multiplayer experience. Utilising the Xbox Live (or PSN) service the matchmaking, friends lists and ability to jump in and out of people’s games is very easy indeed.

Xbox_Multiplayer_682

I bashed through a few levels last night with the above-named traitor and it works really really well. You can either head off on your own in their game or team up to take on boss fights. The number of enemies is increased and if we hadn’t accidently been on easy level I could imagine those hordes of various enemies would have been a serious mission to take on.

There have been certain things removed from the game such as the real world auction house which in some ways cheapens the game but it also ensures you can now play offline, something which was a huge complaint in the PC version.

Xbox_Multiplayer_711

And really that’s about it, the original game was given a 9.5 and on one hand I’m tempted to score it higher as it is so much easier to jump into without losing the depth of Diablo but at the same time some small portions have been removed while keeping the entire story and game in tact.

In the end if they’d added in a few new challenge dungeons it could have touched that magical 10 mark but they didn’t.

This is the best Diablo 3 experience, not enough to make the average Diablo fan go out and buy the console version but if you haven’t picked up Diablo 3 yet and you are wondering if it’s worth it then let me allay those fears. It’s fantastic

Oh heck! Now I’m in two minds about buying this. I had said no at first, as it doesn’t sound like it has the same playability (with people) as Borderlands, but now a 9.5… I may have to give it a crack!

I’m only getting D3 once the price has dropped. I survived boycotting it when it was on the PC, i’ll survive waiting for the price to drop 😛

Now if only SimCity can have its definitive edition on the consoles. haahahhh

Busy playing it at the moment on the PS3. Reminds me a hell of a lot of Champions Of Norath. The game is slick, controls are really easy to handle, graphics are good. No sticking, or glitching. Theres a c rap load of enemies etc. I think that the rating of around 9 is pretty fair for this game.
BTW, i also have it on the PC. They are both equally good, but offline couch op is a definate winner for consoles

Why does it piss you off? Buying the game a second time is completely optional it is not like they were forcing you to do it. You act as if this is something that is being forced upon us when in reality it is not. Did you expect them to find some way to give it for free on consoles if you already bought the PC version? Because that is a tad ridiculous.

I think it would have been fare for blizzard to offer a discount if you order through them and have a d3 game code or what ever its called, the numbers you use to register the game when you install it. nothing is ever free, but it never hurts to offer your repeat customers to a little perk every now and again

It’s kind of funny then, that the poster child of PC gaming, Diablo would actually leave PC gamers frustrated… but then be a perfect console title. That sounds pretty cruel to me, like Blizzard is pouring salt in the wounds of the master race.

Ah who am I kidding they deserve it.. muahahahhahah!!

I hated all forms of AH on the PC version…. I loved Diablo 2 most because of loot farming for use, but the AH changed it into gold farming and buying…. It didn’t work for me, in my opinion an AH has no place in a Diablo game. And don’t tell me “just don’t use it”, the fact is it’s there.

Loving the console version though, never picked up the pc because always online. And to be honest, I’m pleased with the way things turned out.

Where is the information on the inventory system or if the skills are exactly the same? How does the MP over Internet work and most importantly feel? Is it P2P or through an international server somewhere? Can you adjust the difficulty level by simulating more players like in the PC version? How was the loot changed from the PC version that has the RMAH? Can you be self-sufficient or do you still pick up tons of crap and nothing useful? These are all questions which should have been covered by a proper review.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that most reviewers will give them amazing scores in the first week, and the reviewers who review the game longer will give much more moderate scores.

I’m sorry that I missed my connection to get on the hype wagon.

But are you asking for a review or a comparative analysis?

Because, while it might be interesting for a PC gamer to know to what extent the console version differs from the PC version, for a console gamer (who never played the PC version), a comparative rant wouldn’t be useful at all.

So if I wanted to buy the xbox version, what you’ve mentioned just wouldn’t be helpful. In fact, it would make for some tedious reading.

Really?! So you wouldn’t want to know how the game feels when you play with your buddies over the Internet? You wouldn’t want to know if the game will be too easy for the first 15 hours of your character? You wouldn’t want to know if the items that you pick up will be helpful to your cause, or only worth gold?

Console gamers would have heard about the issues of D3 on PC and will probably want to know whether they have all been fixed before handing over R600-700.

That’s not what I said. But if I’m buying this game for my console, I WOULD want a comprehensive review of THIS version (that covers multiplayer as well as singleplayer), rather than how it compares point-by-point to a 2-year old PC version.

Sure, console owners know about the Error-37 issue, and most would probably be aware of the Auction House shenanigans or the ridiculous drop rates, and while it would be interesting to see how these issues were dealt with for the console version, I wouldn’t want to read an article where it’s more about the PC version then its console companion.

That’s why editorials exist. It wouldn’t be a review, if Gavin went on about the PC version, Now maybe Gavin will revisit it in an editorial or maybe he’ll hand that over to you. 😛

            September 5, 2013 at 15:37

Well… do you honestly feel that the entire console version was reviewed? Or was only certain sections reviewed (knowing full well that most players are familiar with D3 on PC and therefore don’t need to hear it again).

I am of the impression that neither was done. There is no proper comparison between the PC version and the console version, but at the same time neither is the console version reviewed it it’s entirety.

Agree with you man, it would be helpful to know what changes have been made in the console version if you are not doing a in depth review of the game.

“As such I’m not going to review the entire game again as the story and basic game is exactly the same; but things have changed in this console release.”

A lot of downvotes you received. But I got the same feeling from the review. The 9.5 score for the PC was way off and the assumptions made on the PC review as to the longevity and value turned out to be wrong. No mention in the PC or this review of the story and the impact it had on re-playability.

I really think this is a poor review that anyone can gobble up after 2 hours of play. And to just carry on with the points made in the PC review and without doing a some comparison to the changes is unhelpful. “Because Diablo 3 pc scored 9.5 I have to score this higher”. Seems absurd?

PC gamer tears tastes like mountain dew, and are given to the dirty console peasants to sustain themselves.

I’d happily buy this if Blizzard would refund me for the PC version I bought and played for about 20min before I uninstalled. No fun paying to be a beta tester for a console game :/
As a recovering pirate, my faith in buying games took a huge knock after getting D3.

Hear hear, heck I don’t even have a PS3, but I won’t be playing D3 on the PC ever again, so I might as well have a copy of the better game.

You who has only played 20 min has no right to criticize the game when you havent even really played it.

Can’t believe I fell to the light side and got it for PC! Now I will never know the joy of a proper Diablo 3 game unless I risk the expansion or buy the same game again for XBox!

    Meanwhile at Blizzard HQ.

Mike: “Guys we screwed up our Audience. Our sales for the expansion will drop by half due to the fact that we created a shitty game.”

PR Guy: “No problem lets just port the game to console players who did not experience Diablo 2 and thus have no idea what they are missing out on.”

Mike: “Great idea and as a bonus we will remove all the crap that our loyal fan-base cried about”

Yup, bought it on Tuesday… And it’s awesome! Loving it! Very addictive too. Great game for me to use a 2 week filler till GTA V arrives (although I have a sneaky suspicion I will slot in some quality Diablo III time after Sep’17th coz it’s just so darn addictive!).

    Nice review Gavin.

Man I love it when I get lucky. I’m a small time gambler and over the course of the evening I had R100 on one number and bang it hit.

More cash for games this month. GTAV next.

I really didn’t want to give Blizzard more money after being so disappointed with Diablo 3 PC, but it actually plays much better on console.

Elastic banding isn’t as noticeable, less lag problems as it can be played offline (obviously) and its just all round better polished. The reasons I disliked the PC version can’t be fixed with the console version, terrible itemization ect, but Diablo 3 is dumbed down for console users which I’m perfectly fine with, so I don’t notice the terrible item/drop rates as I’m busy enjoying the game.

I’d like to get this game, but Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming out in a couple weeks and that is going to keep me busy enough as it is. I won’t have time for Diablo 3, It was probably not the smartest move to release it so close to GTA 5.

Scoring the same as the PC version?
The PC review must have been amazingly generous which makes me question this score too.

Diablo 1 was incredibly fun on the PS1 and I imagine this will be too for a pick up and play arpg. Especially in this “streamlined” (dumbed down) game that shares its name with the two legendary games.

I’ll get into D3 again at some stage… when they add more decent content. I got so sick of playing the exact same game to level up a character, but hey, I only did it 4 times and still wasn’t capped to lvl 60 yet.

are there any restrictions to the offline version, like unreachable dungeons or unobtainable items? Im so used to game makers wanting to squeeze you for every penny… i feel like being able to play the whole game offline is too good to be true. any help is much appreciated.

D3 / ROS was a let down to many who played previous Diablo Series Games. The original team left long ago and it has been revamped into Wowablo and is a short lived game. The new Bliz pretty much sold it on it’s old name even though it was very different. It went good for a month then everyone said “That is it?” and left.
