By Philip Dunkley So about a week and a half ago, I get an invite from Acer South Africa, to join them for an evening of drink and food, and to also have a look at the new Gaming system they have launched, known as the Predator. Now, as you all know, we don’t do a lot of PC …

The first verdict for EA’s impressive survival horror game is in – and the score will keep fans excited. The latest Box World 360 mag, on shelves today, awards the survival horror game 91%, claiming that Resident Evil developer Capcom should take note, “Because EA can teach them a thing or three about survival horror.” They even likened the games …

By Philip Dunkley It may seem that I am revisiting a realm of PC gaming that I have long since abandoned lately, but when a game like Spore is released; any gamer would be ignorant to not at least take a look. Now the reason I don’t play to many PC games anymore is purely because I run a …

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Review – PSP

By Nick De Bruyne

by Nick de Bruyne [Second Opinion by Daniel de Bruyne] I want to kick this review off by saying that my experience reviewing The Force Unleashed on PSP has been quite an interesting one.... In order to ensure that I haven't been tainted by the console version, I have also included a second opinion by my brother, Daniel de Bruyne [Yes, there are more of us]. He is perfect for the job due to the fact that he has never really been big into console gaming, but is a handheld aficionado through and through, so look for his impressions after my review.... Feel the Power screen2.jpgThe Force Unleashed is essentially a 3rd Person Action game that brings forward a twist to the gameplay by empowering your character with a hefty amount of force powers as your primary means of kicking the asses of on anyone stupid enough to get in your way.... What did blow my mind is that the PSP version actually has more settings that it's big brothers as well as more enemies and bosses too, giving any console owners another decent reason to play through the handheld version as well. This comes as a bonus because while the Xbox 360 version took me around nine hours to complete, the PSP version clocked in at somewhere in the ten to twelve hour mark, not including any other modes. The game also comes with a "Force Unleashed" mode, which comes in the form of historic battles from the movies such as Luke escaping from the Sarlacc pit or Obi-Wan and Anakin taking on Count Duku in Episode 3 as well as a mode called "Order 66" which pits you against waves of enemies. There is a Force Duel mode as well that let's you try and make your way through battles with all the major characters (and more!).... When All Is Said And Done Krome Studios, who developed the port, have really impressed me with their efforts and given me full reason to hope that they will be given a full budget and a next-gen title to work on soon.... Value: 8/10 [ A fairly lengthy story, multiplayer and the "Force unleashed" modes give you a fair amount to do] Overall: 8.5/10 [ The Force is strong with this one ] ___________________________________________________ Second Opinion: Daniel de Bruyne From the word "go", The Force Unleashed is what I would call a "quencher".... The Force Unleashed puts you straight into the fight as none other than the ruthless and infamous galactic bad-boy, Darth Vader, who during his mission to destroy a wanted Jedi Knight, discovers that the Jedi knight has a son which he takes under his wing as a new apprentice, and is the character you will become and must develop throughout the game.... Don't worry, you can still enjoy tantalizing light saber battles, but why waste time swinging your light saber at a storm trooper when you can use the force to choke him or pick him up and thrash him into whatever you like, killing him long before you even get close enough to swing a light saber at him? The game makes sure that there are plenty of loose items lying around so that you can use just about anything as a projectile to lob at your enemies or use to just plain break stuff and giggle about it. Besides for an awesome Star Wars setting, good story line, great cut scenes and the ever satisfying flailing of storm troopers and a host of other enemies all over the place to keep you entertained, you can look forward to hectic one-on-one fights with Jedi Knights and other boss characters that will call on all your gaming finger-mojo and button bashing skills to fight at top speed and pull off combo activated finishing moves similar to God of War. In my opinion this is not only a quencher for the Star Wars fans in need of sustenance, but also for anyone that likes a game with satisfying fights with hack and slash elements leaving you feeling like you can open a can of whoop-ass on just about everything.

I am a fan of the Gametrailers video reviews and do hope that one day we will be able to put something together just like them, but until I win the lottery this is not likely to happen…  But anyway where was I going with this… Oh yeah, Gametrailers has put up a review of Rockband 2 and since we …

By Werner Dohse Science of Evil? It’s more like Science of Boredom. This is hands down the most boring-est (yes… I had to create a word to express my true feelings) game I have played in a long time. I even found myself thinking that I should go wash my car, rather than playing (a chore I might add that …

Metroid Prime: Hunters – Reviewed – Nintendo DS

By Nick De Bruyne
September 16, 2008

It doesn't take long to realise that even though the little DS isn't the most powerful machine in the world, its control scheme is quite capable of handling a first person shooter, if done properly.... So how well has the game translated across to the third dimension and does it manage to pull off a true first person experience that can fit in your pocket.... The idea behind hunters is that you are not alone in your quest for these artifacts, so expect to run into some other folks who will be prepared to fight you for it.... Most levels have a similar formula to them, which usually involves getting certain artifacts, working out how to get to certain areas, fighting a boss and then getting the hell out when a self-destruct sequence initiates. While each level does essentially play out the same they are quite varied in their theme and the approach that you need to take to clear them , be prepared for a good load of backtracking though. What this game does realise is that you can't approach the first person shooter the same way that you would on a PC.... Your top screen is where the game plays out and the bottom screen is used for aiming with the stylus, selecting weapons and also letting you to jump with a double tap of your stylus.... Occasionally you will go into a mode where you roll up into a morph ball and can either control it with your d-pad or your stylus, both of which also feel smooth. ...Some of the levels can be frustrating as they leave you to run through them a couple of times as you try and figure out where you should be going next.... While this system works fairly well, it still puts you in the situation where you need to reach certain portals before being able to save. That means that if you haven't found a portal and someone else wants to play the DS or you want to play something else, you have the option to either run all the way back manually, play the entire first half of the level again later, or sit tight and keep playing until you reach a portal. This somewhat kills the fact that the rest of the game has been well designed for mobility because no one wants to play through a section again, and fight the same boss three times over, but this is unfortunately something that does happen. Being a DS game, the graphics are obviously nothing out of this world, but they do their job very well and make up a convincing 3D world.... If you are a hardcore FPS player and are looking for a true shooter-in-your-pocket I won't say that you won't find it here, but I won't say that you will either. While I have not had a chance to try the multiplayer, I hear that it is a blast, so if you are someone who has a ton of DS wielding hombre's that are keen for a fun multiplayer experience, I can definitely see how much joy could be squeezed out of the deathmatch.

First Crysis: Warhead review nails a 92% score

By Nick De Bruyne

PC gaming magazine PC Zone has released what looks to be the first review of Crysis: Warhead hitting it with a super solid 92%. This is a little bit of what they have to say: With its budget price and improved multiplayer, there’s more than enough here to cheer nay-sayers. One of the most striking things about Warhead is the way it shakes the template Crysis snowglobe and has its constituent parts drift and settle into surprising new patterns. In Crysis encounters with enemies were heavily cordoned off from each other, in Warhead anything goes. It’s a frenzy of intelligent and original level design, far away from the Far Cry model that Crysis aped.” Sounds like a blast and something to look forward to on PC. I played through Crysis earlier this year and really had a fantastic time, even if my Macbook Pro was huffing and puffing the whole way through but I actually hear that Warhead is going to be more spec friendly than the first one. Crysis Warhead apparently has a South African ETA of Friday 19 September.
