Samsung’s new SUHD TV is impressive, as is its price tag

Samsung SUHD TV

Last night, I went to the launch of the SUHD TV. I honestly wasn’t expecting that much – a TV is a TV is a TV, right? Well, I was wrong. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to upgrade to this model anytime soon.

The SUHD TV is curved and gorgeous. The actual TV itself is built to be a display piece and it will make you the envy of the neighborhood. Of course, it’s not just about how the TV looks in your living room, it’s how it looks when it’s on and showing the latest and greatest entertainment. Here is how cool the tech is as copied and pasted from their press release:

The product utilises Samsung’s proprietary, eco-friendly nano-crystal  technology, which provides viewers with 64 times more colour expression than conventional TVs. This is supported by the intelligent SUHD re-mastering engine, which automatically analyses the brightness of images to minimise additional power consumption while expressing ultimate contrast levels, producing images with much darker blacks and an elevated brightness 2.5 times brighter than usually.

In actual fact, it does just this. Every color pops off the screen, the contrast is incredible and I don’t think I’ve ever seen picture quality this good. 4k on the curved screen is beautifully crisp and I finally saw what they meant about the value of curved vs flat screen – even when viewing from the side, the picture looks great instead of the angled visibility issues of a flat screen.

Unfortunately, the model that they had on show that was truly stunning was the 88″ TV. After making us all fall in love with it, they announced the price – a cool R250k. Why would a TV cost more than a mid-sized sedan? Well, Michelle Potgieter explained:

I’m not sure that I could justify that price. That said, if I had all the money, I’d probably dish out for it. I can’t even tell you how gorgeous it is. But here are some pictures I took at the event I asked Matty to take with my phone because my heels were killing me, including my celebrity selfie.

As impressive as the TV is, I wonder if it really is best for gaming. With the Xbox barely managing to push out 900p and the PS4 offering 1080p, neither will let us game at 4k. Will the upscaling make games look worse? Would a TV like this end up wasted when games simply can’t dish out the visuals? Or is this purely for other media that will look stunning at this resolution?

They see it as a means to “motivate” you to work hard and earn the cash to get it. That is if your not getting paid peanuts and your boss doesn’t rake all the cash your making for him (We all just want that proper bonus).

That is the reason I work in a corporate environment. Work is hard and everyone hates IT but at least we get payed well. 😛

And currently sitting at an Eskom power station being built makes you appreciate all the lies Eskom keeps telling people. 😛

The price will come down. Due to limited current quantities and lack of mainstream demand the manufacturing costs are insane.

Crisis. My point is on the naming. As soon you call something “High Definition”, you are in crap with the upgrades naming conventions. Ultra was used, by Samsung, for their Ultra High Definition Tv’s, at around that price (more, R360K?) in December 2013 at a display in a mall I was in.

    Where to from SUDTV?

Oh, and I do not believe the TV is worth it. Happy with something that works adequately at home, thank you very much. Got a cheap LCD a few years ago, it is not brilliant but it works and keeps us happy. Upgrade? Cannot see why?

So I choose…either this TV, or put down a deposit on a house…tough choice…NOT! If anyone spends that much money on a TV, they deserve a dead pixel right in the middle of it!

Well anyone that has the money to waste on such an expensive tv would have the money to just buy a new one if there is a dead pixel.

You think anyone will notice a dead pixel on that size?

You might not notice it at 1st, but once you do it will be all you can see. That dead pixel just sitting there pulling all your attention like some SUHD blackhole.

Man, I’d have to star in at least 2500 backstreet Brazilian pornos to make up the change for that.

“I’m not sure that I could justify that price”

It’s justified, the same way a car that costs R1.8 million is justified. It’s all about status… I mean, yes, that R1.8 million car drives like a dream and so does the R250k TV (well, not drive but you get the idea). These types of products are mostly for people to show that they have “made it”. Either that or people that are stupid enough to take out a loan for a TV 🙂

You see, you get the guys that buy the R1.8 million car and would say that it just fits their status, then you get the guys that by the Bugatti Veyrons or the McClaren P1s, now those guys, well they are the guys who’d wonder why anyone would settle for a puny little R250k screen….

I’ve never used my CC for TV’s, computers, games or any electronics that aren’t critical.

          I feel it’s seriously irrisponsible.

I beg to differ at your last statement about Xbox resolution etc…

I have the Series 8 4k TV… The TV itself does a wonderful job in upscaling everything to 4k. It just does it automatically and you dont experience out of focus or anything.

About the brightness? Yeah… I never had the need to go into “dynamic” brightness

Nice interview Zoe. You asked the right questions. Why the hell is the damn thing curved and why the hell is it expensive.

It also looked like you put the marketing lady at ease, so she came off more human than corporate robot information mouth piece.

Even IF you can afford the TV your sitting with one teeny tiny problem. DSTV and SABC do not broadcast in UHD and probably never will. As for movies you are kinda limited in SA with that. Youtube? Better get one hell of a internet line to stream UHD. Such high tech equipment are just not meant for this country.

I last read that they are working on new standards for blu ray discs and players to carter for 4k movies. End of the year or next year, for new 4k blu ray players.

So there is still time for these uhd tv’s to get cheaper. I don’t mean this particular tv though.

Even the uhd streaming is not proper uhd quality.

I wonder what mindset one would have to purchase a TV of that size? Do you walk into the store and go, “I’d like a television, about half the size of the Russian continent, to mount on the wall by my bachelor pad in Sandton, with one other room than that of the kitchen…” Or do you buy it for use at a Rugby stadium for the people in the back row?

I know someone who has a cinema room that can fit four of those screens so I suppose it depends on how wealthy you are.

I’m not a fan of the curved TV screens. It doesn’t feel right; no matter where you sit it feels like you’re in the wrong spot.

As for the price tag, yeah all latest tech is astronomically expensive as the tech hasn’t yet become mainstream enough for the market and demand to pull the price down. This happens with each new TV that gets released. 😉
