I’ve known that my PC is due for a serious upgrade since the beginning of this year. The Nvidia flagship cards out now have been extremely tempting, but I’ve been told time and time again that the 800 series be worth the long wait. It’s been difficult, but if these leaked benchmarks are anything to go by that wait might indeed have been worthwhile.
There have been many rumors regarding the desktop versions on Nvidia’s 800 series over the past few days. Most of them try to pin down a release date for the cards, which is currently sitting around the November/December windows. Another leak late yesterday supposedly reveals more information about the card itself, and how it stacks up against the current Nvidia top dog.
A screenshot that made its way online yesterday supposedly shows the 3DMark score of Nvidia’s GTX 880. Of course, the authenticity is up in the air, but at the very least we know it’s not a shot of the laptop version of the card. The screenshot clearly shows CPUZ running, showing that the card was being used with a i7 4770K, which proves that this is a desktop benchmark. With that said, the results are extremely impressive.
Nvidia’s GTX 780 scores around 4500 on 3DMark, with the GTX 780ti coming in at 5000. The GTX 880 benchmark shows the card pushing out a score of 6110, which is a massive performance jump. That’s close to a 35% increase in power, which means that the long wait for the new series could have been well worth it.
Of course, there’s still that little voice at the back of my head that questions how authentic the test is, but if Nvidia made us wait this long then I’d expect performance on this level. The cards will apparently hit shelves later this year, and by then we should have a better picture of how well they actually run.

And with massive performance comes massive amounts of arms & legs required. So I’d wait until AMD releases their new range before jumping on one, because Nvidia will invariably drop the price then just like they did with the Titan when it got competition.

R9 280 is getting a refresh next month. It’s the most affordable 4K card right now. The Nvidia cards are way over priced compared to the AMD equivalent and AMD will even throw in a bunch of games.

Yeh its a nice card the R9 280 is a rebranded 7950 and the R9 280x is a rebranded 7970. Although they run with lower power consumption and runs cooler than the 7950 and 7970.

That’s cute, thinking the Titan actually had competition. AMD never got to hit the same benchmarks nVidia did with this current generation and if this 35% increase is true, they’re going to get blown out of the water to the point of being obsolete less than a few months after release.
The saddest part is all the people saying AMD’s hardware is better, which in a lot of generations it was, unfortunately for AMD, they’re so terrible at software support that their drivers do nothing but limit their cards because they’re so bad.

Been putting off an upgrade so long just waiting for the 800 series to release, awesome to finally get a hint of what the performance margin will be. They were expexted Q2 of 2014 but the lack of mass production of the 20nm Haswell chip is what pushed it’s release date back so much.

You cant even run the firestrike extreme bench at 1080p. LOL The firestrike extreme bench runs at a resolution 2560×1440. The weaker version of firestrike benchmark runs at 1080p. So your score is actually pretty low.

Thing about switching to AMD is, Nvidia gets all those exclusive and pretty effects that they’re pushing for in more and more games.
Ubisoft is a good example, with TXAA (no jaggies), HBAO+(contact-shadows), soft shadows (fading shadows) in recent games, which are all fancy words but they do make for a substantial difference. ie Watchdogs, Black Flag and others.
AMD has so much more bang for buck and I do love their “underdog” formula, so hopefully they can counter this. Maybe consoles make up for these minor disadvantages?

What I find extremely funny in that regard is that Nvidia advertises all of these “pretty effects”, but then doesn’t give you a card powerful enough to run it. Obviously it depends on the game, but majority of people can’t run 1080p, ultra graphics,HBAO+, high soft shadows, and TXAA 4X at a steady 60fps with a single card. They’re like “Hey, we have all these awesome effects! But you’re going to need 3 780ti’s to run them…” Obviously that’s an exaggeration, but you get the point xD

well am pretty sure maxwell is coming 1H 2015 and these cards won’t be manufactured by great numbers.. since they were late in schaduale even the the gtx 990 getting a release date of Q1 2015. tho am pretty sure they will be more power efficient than performance boost, so i’ll get the the previous gen gtx 880 dual cards when they drop on price, since i expect a good drop in price for them
Reason: i don’t pay for electrecity since my father works on that company other wise i would get the new gtx 900 series, i hope this becomes true, i can dream right ?

If you’re going to spend 500, and the 880 is rumored to have a decent performance increase over the 780ti and only cost 500, I would wait till the 880 releases and find out whats really up with the price and performance before deciding. Its only a couple months away.
