Update readies your Vita for the PlayStation 4

If you live in the US or the UK, the PlayStation 4 will become available for you to take home later this month. the rest of us will have to wait until the middle of next month for all of that awaiting greatness. In the meantime though, you can get you PlayStation Vita ready to wirelessly conjugate with its bigger brother.

The 3.00 update for the PlayStation Vita has launched, adding numerous new things, including  a ‘Panoramic Camera’ mode, improved Parental Controls, an updated  friends app and rather teasing application that allows you to pair the Vita with a PlayStation 4.

I can’t say I’ve ever even used the Vita’s camera or seen any need for a Panoramic shooting mode. A gun rack? I don’t even own a gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I gonna do with a gun rack? I will, however, use the hell out of the PS4 link, which grants the PS4 second-screen abilities and remote play, so I can still play Killzone: Shadow Fall while the Mrs watches rubbish on the telly.

Remote Play is a game changer for me. Even if it only works decently when on the same local WiFi due to our lack of decent internet, I’ll get a Vita JUST for this alone. I love the games on the Wii U with this feature and the PS takes it a step further.

so how does the Remote Play work anyway? Does it connect to the PS4 via your wi-fi router or is it a direct connection. I’m very keen on this feature, but am concerned with range.

Very much like current remote play – It can work over ad-hoc, or wifi – or even over 3g if you don’t mind the lag.

So is it worth it to shell out for a Vita if I have PS Plus?

Yes and no; there are some damned cool vita games for free…but I’d wait to see how well the remote play actually pans out. (just keep downloading the free Vita games every month until then)

I mean remote play over 3g. As far as I know Geoffrey is wrong about that.

I’ve done remote play to PS3 using 3G and a Sony Xperia Play. Sony’s also confirmed you can remote play through the internet, albeit quality of experience depends on your internet connection. they do, however, recommend that the vita and PS4 be on the same network.

Maybe we’re not talking about the same thing, I’m talking about remote play specifically for the PS4 to the Vita.

            From the FAQ:

            What is Remote Play?

Remote Play will enable users to stream their PS4 gameplay to their PS Vita system via WiFi, freeing up the television for other uses.

Can I use Remote Play via 3G?

            No.

Got a vita as a present from my wife this weekend. Loving it. Luckily I’ve been downloading the free ps+ games for more than a year now so I already have a decent library of pretty cool games. Here’s hoping remote play is actually gonna work, not like on ps3.
